The GDR Oberliga 1970/71 was the 22nd edition of the top division of the GDR . The SG Dynamo Dresden became champion for the second time . The season began on August 22, 1970 and ended on June 16, 1971.
Season course
Dynamo Dresden superiorly secured the championship. Already on the 23rd match day the Dresdeners were unmatchable ahead of Carl Zeiss Jena at the top of the table and thus won the first championship since 1953. The defending champion Jena finished second ahead of HFC Chemie, which with third place was the second-best placement in its history (after the 1952 championship ) reached. They were followed by Magdeburg and the promoted Union Berlin, whose fifth place in the table meant the best league position of all time for the Berlin club.
On the other hand, there was disappointment at the founding member of the Oberliga Chemie Leipzig, because the chemists had to relegate for the first time. In the following 20 years, chemistry was only represented seven times in the top division. Leipzig was accompanied by Rot-Weiß Erfurt; for the Erfurt it was already the fourth descent. The team from Erfurt had two points ahead of Stahl Riesa before the last match day. Due to a 1: 3 defeat at BFC Dynamo and a simultaneous win for Riesa at home against Rostock, Erfurt did not keep the class.

FDGB Cup
The FDGB Cup was won this season by the newly crowned champions Dynamo Dresden, who thus crowned his successful season with the first double in GDR football. Dresden's defeated final opponent was the BFC Dynamo, who qualified for the international competition. It was the first of four duels between the two big Dynamo teams in the cup final (all of which Dresden won).
International competitions
After the self-imposed boycott of the UEFA competitions in the previous year, the GDR teams competed in the European Cup and Cup Winners' Cup again this season . The master Carl Zeiss Jena and cup winner Vorwärts Berlin achieved great success. After victories over Fenerbahçe Istanbul and Sporting Lisbon , Jena was only eliminated in the quarter-finals against Red Star Belgrade . Just as far came the Berliners, who beat FC Bologna and Benfica Lisbon before they were eliminated by PSV Eindhoven . In the last trade fair city cup , Dynamo Dresden was eliminated in the second round against eventual cup winners Leeds United . After a 0: 1 in Leeds, a 2: 1 win was not enough for Dresden to advance. As in the previous year, the DFV did not send any teams for the 1970 Intertoto Cup .
