The GDR Oberliga 1960 was the twelfth edition of the top division of the GDR . The ASK Vorwärts Berlin became champion for the second time . The season began on March 19, 1960 and ended on November 27, 1960.
Before the season
Turbine Erfurt's descent meant that the Erfurt district was not represented in the upper house for the first time since the Oberliga was founded. Instead, three communities came from the Halle district.
Season course
The championship won better than ever before (with nine points ahead) Vorwärts Berlin . Overall, Vorwärts was at the top of the table on 23 match days and already secured the championship title on match day 24. Last year's champion SC Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt was behind the forward team for a long time, but without seriously challenging them. After the Berlin team won the title early, Wismut then slipped to fifth place. With Dynamo Berlin , the runner-up also came from the capital. The Dynamo players benefited from their strong second half of the season, while they were still in danger of relegation after the first half of the season.
The relegated men were Chemie Zeitz and progress Weissenfels , who were never to be promoted to the top division again. Zeitz provided the top scorer for the second time with Bernd Bauchspieß . Belly spit later became one of the most successful league strikers at Chemie Leipzig. Motor Zwickau finished fourth as the best BSG .

FDGB Cup
The 1960 FDGB Cup was won by Motor Jena. The Empor Rostock team, who had previously defeated the defending champions Dynamo Berlin and the eventual champions Vorwärts Berlin, lost out in the final.
International competitions
For the GDR teams, the European Cup competitions ended quickly. Vorwärts Berlin and the Leipzig city selection failed in the European Cup Winners' Cup and Exhibition Cities Cup in the first round. Wismut Karl-Marx-Stadt, on the other hand, benefited in the preliminary round of the European Cup against Glenavon FC from the fact that the British authorities did not issue visas to the GDR team and that Glenavon did not want to play his home game on a neutral pitch. So Wismut got into the first round without a fight, where they were eliminated (again after three games) against Rapid Vienna .
