GDR football league 1965/66

The GDR Oberliga 1966/67 was the 18th edition of the top division of the GDR . FC Karl-Marx-Stadt became champions for the first time . The season began on August 6, 1966 and ended on May 13, 1967.

Season course

The championship of FC Karl-Marx-Stadt was as surprising as the title win by Chemie Leipzig three years earlier. Karl-Marx-Stadt was only promoted back to the league in 1962 and since then had achieved fourth place as the best placement in 1964. In the end, it should be the only big title for the team, three years later they even rose from the league again.

In the 1966/67 season, however, FCK dominated the league and was already the champions two game days before the end. In the end, Lokomotive Leipzig, second in the table, was seven points behind - the last time Vorwärts Berlin was champion in 1960 with a similar margin (nine points). The Karl-Marx-Städter consistently occupied the top of the table from the seventh game day. Second place was also the best place in the league for pursuers Leipzig, having finished third twice and fourth once in previous years. Behind the FCK and Lok, the teams were very close together. Motor Zwickau, third in the table, had only two points more than twelfth (!) Chemie Leipzig.

Zwickau's good placement was the last time in the history of the upper league that a company sports association was among the top three teams in GDR football, until 1991 the league was then to be dominated by football clubs (including Dynamo Dresden). However, one of the focus clubs founded in 1965/66 was one of the relegated clubs, BFC Dynamo. The Berliners accompanied last year's climber Wismut Gera in the GDR league . Here, too, the decision was made early on. The second promoted Union Berlin, on the other hand, surprised positively and finished sixth in the end - ahead of the record champions, defending champions and city rivals Vorwärts.

    soccer player of the year

After the season, Dieter Erler was named Footballer of the Year 1967 for the first time by FC Karl-Marx-Stadt . FC Lok Leipzig landed in second place, while Otto Fräßdorf from FC Vorwärts Berlin came in third.

    FDGB Cup

The FDGB Cup was won this season by BSG Motor Zwickau. The losing finalist was FC Hansa Rostock, who had previously defeated the later champions Karl-Marx-Stadt and the reigning champions Vorwärts Berlin. Again the final took place during the current league season. The cup defender Chemie Leipzig had already failed in the second round at the second division forward Meiningen .

    International competitions

In the European Cup, all GDR representatives surpassed their first opponents. Forward Berlin and Chemie Leipzig were already defeated in the next round (Berlin in the European Cup of National Champions Górnik Zabrze , Leipzig in the European Cup Winners' Cup Standard Liège ). Only Lokomotive Leipzig stayed longer in the competition and was only defeated by FC Kilmarnock in the quarter-finals of the Messestädte Cup . Lok had previously defeated the top European team from Benfica Lisbon in the round of 16. Five East German teams were represented in the last International Football Cup , Vorwärts Berlin, Carl Zeiss Jena, Lokomotive Leipzig, Hansa Rostock and Dynamo Dresden. There were also duels with West German teams in the preliminary groups (Rostock against Karlsruher SC , Jena against Eintracht Braunschweig and Berlin against Borussia Neunkirchen ). None of the GDR teams made it to the next round.
