GDR football league 1979/80

The GDR Oberliga 1980/81 was the 32nd edition of the top division of the GDR . It began on August 23, 1980 and ended on May 30, 1981. The Berlin FC Dynamo defended again on the last match day, this time with a 2-1 win against FC Carl Zeiss Jena, its title from the previous year and won the third championship .

Season course

The title fight was partly determined by four teams. After the first half series, Berlin's FC Dynamo , 1. FC Magdeburg and Dynamo Dresden were three teams with the same number of points at the top of the table. This trio was followed by FC Carl Zeiss Jena , two points behind. During the winter break (end of January) Dresden suffered an unexpected weakening of their team. Before the national team left for Argentina, the players Gerd Weber (risk of fleeing), Peter Kotte and Matthias Müller (confidante) were imprisoned and excluded from any game operations. Later it was only very briefly “The players were excluded from SG Dynamo because of political and moral misconduct”. This gap could not be filled with the almost inexhaustible reservoir of highly talented young players. In the end, Dresden took fourth place behind the Magdeburgers with equal points. Magdeburg, which took the lead again on the 17th matchday, was not constant enough in the second half to seriously contend for the title. In the end, they finished third, also thanks to the Dresden home defeat against Riesa on the last match day. It is remarkable that Jena only got two out of eight possible points during the season against Magdeburg and Dresden. This is one of the reasons why the international players from Jena only finished second before the last match day, one point behind the Dynamos from Berlin.

The schedule stipulated that the league leaders met the pursuers from Thuringia in Berlin on the last day of the match. In contrast to last year, a draw was enough for the Berliners to successfully defend their title. The Weinroten deservedly won 2: 1 and managed the master hat trick, which was previously only achieved by the Dynamo namesake from Dresden between 1975 and 1978. Jena also lost its second final 17 days after the final defeat in the European Cup Winners' Cup (1: 2 against Dinamo Tbilissi ) and became runner-up. For Berlin, the best home record against the opponents was the decisive factor in winning the title, although after more than 3 years and 43 unbeaten games against national opponents, they lost a home game again. This happened against the best team in the second half of the season, FC Vorwärts Frankfurt , which came in fifth and led a broad midfield. The last of this field, which had nothing to do with relegation, was the newcomer FC Hansa Rostock . The remaining four teams, including the two old masters BSG Sachsenring Zwickau and BSG Wismut Aue , literally fought until the last second with BSG Stahl Riesa and the newcomer BSG Chemie Böhlen to stay in the league.

On the last day of the match, Zwickau, Böhlen and Aue were able to save themselves on their own, with Riesa having to rely on rifle help. Zwickau, which was relegated on 23 match days and was bottom eleven times, won after 34 winless games abroad 3-1 against the secured newcomer from Rostock. For Zwickau that meant staying up, as they had a better goal difference over their rivals. Aue, who won his game against Magdeburg 2-1, had the worse goal difference compared to the Böhlenern and was dependent on an away win by HFC Chemie in Böhlen. The hosts started the season well with 9: 5 points, but could not maintain this level and kept slipping downwards. After ten games without a win, Böhlen also lost the last one with 0: 1 and had to relegate back to the GDR league after just one year . They were accompanied by the team from Riesa, whose victory in Dresden only had statistical value.
