Christian Backs (born August 26, 1962 ) is a former German soccer player and current soccer coach.

Athletic career

Club / association stations

Christian Backs played in the GDR Oberliga for BFC Dynamo . After his successful youth at BFC, he made his debut in 1981 at the age of 18 in the major league. On the 25th matchday of the 1980/81 season, he came on as a substitute for Ralf Sträßer in the 4-1 away win of the Dynamos at BSG Stahl Riesa ten minutes before the end .

By 1988 he won the GDR championship eight times in a row with the club and the FDGB Cup in 1988 and 1989 . The midfielder played a total of 192 league games for Berlin, scoring 33 goals. He was also on the ball in 19 European Cup games for the BFC.

In the turning point 1989/90 , the 1.74 meter tall midfielder was on the field parallel to his appearances in the first division squad of the BFC in the second class league due to a guest permit for the BSG Bergmann-Borsig Berlin . The late twenties remained loyal to the GDR record champions , renamed FC Berlin, even in the first season of the amateur league in the NOFV area . In 1992, Backs moved within the reunified city to the Reinickendorfer Füchsen and let his career come to an end there, including in the regional league, until 1997.

Selection bets

In the youth competitions of friendship in North Korea , Christian Backs took second place with the GDR junior selection in the summer of 1980. For the premiere of the U-18 European Championship in 1981 , the team around Backs, Stefan Meixner , Carsten Sänger and Damian Halata could not fight for the right to participate in the finals in Germany .

The BFC midfielder could not qualify for the knockout phase of the U-21 European Championship in 1984 with the youth team. In his 16th and last game in this selection, he scored three goals on May 13, 1983 in Biel against Switzerland in the 6-5 victory of the GDR youngsters.

His career in the senior national team of the GDR was not quite as successful as that in the BFC jersey. He made his international debut on July 26, 1983 in Leipzig in a 3-1 draw against the USSR , but in 1985 he resigned from the national team. The main reason for this was the excessive physical strain of the numerous competitions for the injury-prone player. In total, he came to nine appearances in the national jersey of the GDR and scored his only goal in the game against Mexico .

Backs suffered the greatest disappointment of his career in 1984. After successfully qualifying for the 1984 Olympic Games, the GDR's Olympic boycott destroyed his dreams of participating in the Los Angeles Games .

Coaching career

From 2000 to 2004 Backs worked as a trainer in Reinickendorf before returning to BFC Dynamo as a trainer for the 2004/05 season . From this the ex-national player was suspended in April 2005 and Backs was then hired during the summer break of 2005 for the top division Berliner AK 07 . There he was released after a few months in November 2005 and then trained again with the Reinickendorfer foxes. For the 2009/10 season Backs was again signed by BFC Dynamo, but again prematurely - this time by Heiko Bonan - replaced.
