Performance of the German-speaking teams

Germany and Austria

In group 6, Germany and Austria met Albania and Turkey. Austria had to admit defeat in the first game in Mürzzuschlag against Albania with 1: 2 and did not get beyond a 1: 1 against Turkey in Hollabrunn . Germany started a little better, drawing 1-1 in Albania and winning 1-0 in Turkey. In the direct duels there was a 1-1 draw in St. Pölten and a 2-1 home win for Germany in Arnsberg . The Austrians followed in Albania with 0: 3 and in Turkey with 0: 5. With a 7-0 victory in Berlin over Turkey, Germany remained in the race for group victory . However, this would have required a victory in the last game in Trier . Germany did not get beyond a 1-1 draw and sensationally had to let Albania win the group.

GDR and Switzerland

The GDR and Switzerland met Belgium and Scotland in Group 1. A 0-0 start in Belgium was the only point the Swiss won in this group, which put them in last place. Things went better for the GDR, which not only won both games against Switzerland - 6: 5 in Biel and 2: 1 in Brandenburg (Havel) - but also beat Belgium 2: 1 in Weißenfels . Due to a 2-0 defeat in Edinburgh and a 1-1 draw in the second leg in Jena , the GDR ultimately had to be content with the group place behind Scotland.
