The U-21 European Football Championship in 1992 , including qualification, was held from May 29, 1990 to June 3, 1992. Defending champions Soviet Union, Austria and Switzerland failed in the qualification. Germany qualified as group winners for the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated by Scotland.
The tournament was won by Italy, which for the first time became European champions in the U-21 division.
The tournament also served as European qualification for the football tournament of the men at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona . In addition to hosts Spain, Denmark, Italy, Poland and Sweden qualified for the 1992 Summer Olympics, while the Netherlands had to contest a qualification against Australia and were eliminated.
mode
The 32 national teams were drawn in eight groups - six groups of four teams, one group of three teams and one group of five teams. The national selections had to play their encounters with two legs. The respective group winners (marked in yellow) were qualified for the quarter-finals, from which they played in a knockout system with a return leg up to the final.

Performance of the German-speaking teams
Germany
Germany showed no nakedness in qualification group 5, which consisted of only three teams. Germany not only won both games against Luxembourg, but also prevailed against Belgium with two clear victories, which meant they were first in the group and qualified for the quarter-finals.
In the quarter-finals, the German selection Scotland was drawn. In their first game in Bochum, Germany couldn't get past a 1-1 draw after a 0-1 deficit. In the second leg in Aberdeen, the signs were pointing to victory for a long time. Germany were first 2-0 and after an hour 3-1 lead, but not only had to accept the equalization to 3: 3 in the finish, which would still have been enough for promotion. The 4: 3 winning goal three minutes before the end, however, destroyed Germany's hopes for promotion.
Austria
With Denmark and Yugoslavia Austria had to fight two overwhelming opponents in group 4. While the red-white-red selection lost both games against Yugoslavia, they were able to draw in both games against eventual group winners Denmark. In the end, this should only be enough for third place in front of the goalless and pointless bottom light San Marino.
Switzerland
The qualification for Switzerland in Group 2 was disappointing. Right at the beginning there was a 0-2 home defeat against Bulgaria. The series of defeats would continue in the following four games. Only in the last game was Switzerland able to celebrate a respectable success with a 3-1 win in Romania. Nevertheless, this single victory was only enough for the last place in the group.
