1988 European Under-18 Football Championship

The sixth U-18 Football Championship was in the period from 22. bis 27. July 1988 in Czechoslovakia held. It was the first UEFA tournament in Czechoslovakia. The Soviet Union was victorious with a 3-1 win over Portugal on penalties . Defending champion GDR was third. The Federal Republic of Germany , like Austria and Switzerland, could not qualify.

The eight qualified teams played for the title in a knockout system . The quarter-final winners reach the semi-finals, the semi-final winners the final. The semi-final losers play for third place. The quarter-final losers play for two free places for the 1989 World Youth Championship . The semi-finalists also qualify for the World Cup.

GDR

The GDR juniors, the successors to the victorious class around Matthias Sammer , Axel Kruse and Rico Steinmann from autumn 1986, competed as defending champions. Uwe Jähnig had already been part of the squad at the EM two years ago . Once again, after successfully qualifying, he won a medal, this time the bronze one. After the opening win against Denmark (2-0) and the clear semi-final defeat against the Soviet Union (0-3), the team supervised by Lothar Priebe and Rudolf Krause won the game for place 2-0 against Spain. In addition to Jähnig, the trade journal fuwo gave “further top marks for Schulze, Kern and Fuchs.” With Steffen Freund, one of the players became a national team player for the DFB after reunification . The DFB Juniors (eight plus points) just failed in qualification group 1 to Portugal (nine points). The players used in the German U-18s in the preliminary round included Nils Schmäler , Olaf Schmäler , Gerhard Poschner , Sven Scheuer and Marcus Feinbier .
