Soccer career

Karl Marx City

Hermel started at the company sports association (BSG) Lokomotive in Karl-Marx-Stadt, today's Chemnitz . At the age of eleven he moved to the football center of the GDR district Karl-Marx-Stadt , the FC Karl-Marx-Stadt (FCK) . From 1987 to 1989 he was part of the FCK squad for the junior league. In 1988 and 1989 he played in the U-18 and U-20 youth teams of the GDR Football Association and won third place at the U-18 European Football Championship in 1988 with the U-18 team . For the 1989/90 season, FCK took him over as a student in its GDR league team. In the GDR top league, however, the 1.80 m tall Hermel only came to short-term assignments on the 6th and 25th matchdays of this season. In the spring of 1990 it was briefly given to the second-class BSG engine "Fritz Heckert". In 1989 Hermel was also appointed to the GDR's soccer team, with which he played several test matches. Even before the start of the qualifying games for the 1992 Olympics, the team was withdrawn in the course of German reunification .

Zwickau

At the beginning of the 1990/91 season Hermel moved again to the second-rate GDR league , and now played for FSV Zwickau . After the GDR football game was stopped, the FSV started in 1991/92 in the third-class Oberliga Nordost . With Hermel, the Zwickauer rose to the 2nd Bundesliga in 1994 and were able to stay there for four seasons. During this time Hermel was always part of the regular staff as a midfielder or defender, played in 123 of the 136 point games played in the team and scored 18 goals as a defensively oriented player.

Freiburg

After Zwickau's descent, Hermel joined the Bundesliga club SC Freiburg from 1998/99 . There he spent eight seasons until 2006, six in the 1st Bundesliga, 2002/03 and 2005/06 in the 2nd Bundesliga. In his first two years in Freiburg, Hermel was again a regular player. After that, injuries and illness threw him back, so that he was only used sporadically in the following seasons. Hermel played 103 games in the 1st Bundesliga and 27 games in the 2nd Bundesliga for the Breisgau team. While he remained goalless in the 1st Bundesliga, he scored his only championship goal for the sports club in the second division match against Kickers Offenbach on September 11, 2005 after 120 appearances. In 2006 Hermel ended his career as a professional player.

At the beginning of the 2006/07 season he was active as a player-coach for the fourth-class league promoted Bahlinger SC . On October 10, 2007, he was dismissed as a coach because of the weak start to the season. He returned to SC Freiburg and became a youth coach there.
