The second U-23 European football championship , also known as the II. European youth team championship , took place from 1972 to 1974. Selected teams of players under the age of 23 from 21 associations took part in it. Hungary won the European title after two finals against the GDR . Defending champion ČSSR failed in the quarterfinals against the final opponent of the European Championship 1972 USSR.
The teams from the Federal Republic of Germany and Austria were eliminated in the group stage. In contrast to the first edition in 1972, Switzerland and Spain did not take part in the competition.
mode
The 21 registered teams were divided into five groups of three and three groups of two, who determined a group winner in the “everyone against everyone” home and away games. The first in the group reached the quarter-finals; From this round, the participants of the next round were played out in the knockout system in the first and second leg. For the first time, the away goal rule and the penalty shoot-out were used to determine the winner .
