At the 1990 UEFA European Under-21 Championship to 30 teams participating. The European Championship started on August 30, 1988 and ended on October 17, 1990.
Defending champion France failed in the preliminary round. The Soviet Union secured the European title for the third time.
The GDR and Austria, which were in a group with the Soviet Union, fell by the wayside in the preliminary round, as did Switzerland, which had to let Italy go first. Germany won its preliminary group, but failed in the quarter-finals at the Soviet Union.
mode
The 30 national teams were drawn into eight groups - six groups of four teams and two groups of three teams. The national selections had to play their encounters with two legs. The respective group winners (marked in yellow) were qualified for the quarter-finals, from which the knockout system was played with a return leg up to the final.
