Alen Bokšić [ ˈalɛn ˈbɔkʃitɕ ] (born January 21, 1970 in Makarska , SFR Yugoslavia ) is a former Croatian football player .

Career

Alen Bokšić was a trained striker and began his career in 1987 with Hajduk Split . As early as 1990 he took part with the Yugoslav national team at the World Cup in Italy , but was not used. After winning the Yugoslav Cup in 1991, Bokšić moved to AS Cannes in France for one season . The following season he played at Olympique Marseille , where he was French champion and Champions League winner. With 23 goals, Bokšić was also the top scorer in the French league .

After these successes, Bokšić moved to Lazio Rome in Italy for the transfer fee of around DM 15 million . After the European Football Championship in 1996 , where he reached the quarter-finals with Croatia, he played for one season at Juventus Turin . At Juve he won the Italian championship under Marcello Lippi , but lost to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League final .

For the 1997/98 season he moved back to Lazio . He won the 1998 cup with Lazio and was the last team ever to win the European Cup Winners' Cup and the European Supercup the following year . At the '98 World Cup , in which Croatia finished third, Bokšić was absent due to an injury. In 2000 he even won the championship and cup double with the Romans .

From Lazio in 2000 he moved to England to Middlesbrough FC , where he ended his career in early 2003.

For the Croatian national soccer team , Bokšić played 40 times and scored a total of ten goals.
