The Division 1 1975-76 was the 38th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the AS Saint-Etienne , which their ninth title since 1957 won.
The first game day was August 8, 1975, the last game day was June 19, 1976. There was a “winter break” from December 22 to January 16.
societies
Eligible to participate were those clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th, as well as three direct promoters from the second division . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:
- three clubs from the far north ( Racing Lens , OSC Lille , promoted US Valenciennes-Anzin ),
- three from Paris and Champagne ( Paris Saint-Germain , Stade Reims , Troyes Aube Football ),
- four from the northeast ( FC Metz , newly promoted AS Nancy , Racing-Pierrots Strasbourg-Meinau , FC Sochaux ),
- two from the west ( FC Nantes , Girondins Bordeaux ),
- seven from the southeast (defending champions AS Saint-Étienne , Olympique Lyon , Olympique Nîmes , promoted Olympique Avignon , Olympique Marseille , OGC Nice , AS Monaco ),
- one from Corsica ( SEC Bastia ).
Season course
The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference - and even if it was identical, as this year at Lyon and Troyes, the higher number of hits - made the difference for the placement. The bonus point regulation modified in the previous season continued to apply: each team received an additional point for every game they won by at least three goals. This attempt, which should serve to promote attacking football, was not continued beyond this season.
Nice, only 14th last year, started the season brilliantly with three bonus point victories; in November, the team around their new driver Jean-Marc Guillou had seven points ahead of the defending champion, who had come close to two points by Christmas. The reason for this was that Saint-Étienne did not concentrate exclusively on its European Cup games and viewed the league operations as secondary; on the contrary, ASSE was able to "take the vigor of its international successes with it" and proved to be more stable than its competitor over the season, especially away from home. In front of their own crowd, both of the rest of Division 1 could not be defeated anyway: Nice made four draws there, Saint-Étienne five. In the end, the Verts kept the team from the Côte d'Azur at a distance and became champions for the third time in a row. This success, together with the unfortunate outcome of the European final, ultimately helped them to a motorcade on the Champs Élysées and made them - like Stade Reims two decades before them - "an object of France-wide enthusiasm". Nice was able to qualify for the UEFA Cup thanks to its surprising performance , as did Sochaux in third.
At the end of the table, Avignon was already relegated in the spring; the newcomer had no win away from home and only got two draws there. With him Monaco and Strasbourg had to vacate their places, which were taken in the following season by three West French teams ( SCO Angers , Stade Rennes and - for the first time in its club history - Stade Laval ).
One of the special features of this season was the dominance of Argentine goal scorers ( see below ); four of them (Bianchi, Onnis, Curioni and Yazalde) together scored as many goals as the entire teams of Saint-Étienne and Strasbourg.
