Division 1 1986/87

The Division 1 1987/88 was the 50th staging of the professional French football league. Champion was the fifth time since 1961 , the AS Monaco .

The first game day was July 18, 1987, the last game day was June 4, 1988. There was a two-month winter break from December 20 to February 18.

The clubs that had finished the previous season no worse than 17th were eligible to participate, as well as two direct promoters from the second division and the winner of the relegation round . Thus, the following teams played for the championship title this season:

Season course

The two-point rule applied ; in the event of a tie, the goal difference was decisive for the placement.

Before the start of the season, the role of favorite was mainly attributed to Olympique Marseille and defending champion Girondins Bordeaux, but Monaco started the season with a victory over southern rivals OM and quickly secured a lead that was never less than three points until the end. The young trainer Wenger immediately succeeded in creating a cohesive team unit that often “enchanted” the audience with the newcomers Battiston in defense, striker Hateley and Hoddle as a “brilliant, virtuoso director”. While the Monegasque  suffered only one defeat between mid-August and mid-March - and that of all things against newly promoted Niort in their own stadium - Marseille in particular fell back early and recorded 15 defeats at the end of the season. The Girondins also defeated Olympique on matchday five, but gave up unexpectedly many points early on, especially in front of their home crowd, against Le Havre, Toulouse and Cannes. On the other hand, the promoted team from Montpellier surprised, especially after the winter break, when not only newcomers to the league often weakened, the "turbo ignited". The team won in Le Havre, Metz and at Matra Racing, produced a series of victories at home (6-0 against Brest, 5-0 against Saint-Étienne, 4-0 each against Lens and Marseille), and had by far the most successful attack the Division 1 on, became the point best team in the second round and qualified as well as for the UEFA Cup .

While Monaco was able to celebrate winning the championship ahead of time, the decisions at the bottom of the table, with the exception of the relegation of Le Havre, were only made on the last day of the game, whereby the goal difference was the decisive factor in terms of who would at least get another chance in the relegation round at the expense of Brest. Even the 1986 champions , Paris Saint-Germain, narrowly escaped relegation. For the following season , the FC Sochaux and Racing Strasbourg managed the direct promotion, which also succeeded the second division SM Caen after the Barrages .
