The Stade Louis II is a football stadium with an athletics facility in the Principality of Monaco . It is home to the Monaco football club AS Monaco and venue of the IAAF Diamond League meetings more Herculis . It is named after Prince Louis II (1870–1949). As the principality does not have its own football league, AS Monaco plays in the French league system .

history

The Stade Louis II is a pure seating stadium with 18,525 seats in the southern district of Fontvieille in Monaco and is tightly integrated into the surrounding residential buildings. The entire district of Fontvieille was wrested from the Mediterranean by landfilling. The stadium was built by the then Prince Rainier III. commissioned and opened on January 25, 1985.

The actual playing field is 8.50 meters above street level and was built on top of the four-storey stadium car park. Up to 1,700 cars can be parked there. In the belly of the stadium there are also a sports hall and a swimming pool as well as boutiques. The architecture is unique, not only thanks to the residential buildings directly adjoining it all around and the resulting stadium roof consisting of many individual roofs, but also due to several large, arched columns behind one of the gates.

Events

In addition to the AS Monaco league games, the UEFA Super Cup was held every year between 1998 and 2012 at the Stade Louis II at the end of August . This was the match between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and the previous season's UEFA Europa League .

The Herculis athletics meeting has been held in the stadium since 1987 . It has been part of the IAAF Diamond League since 2010 . From 2003 to 2005 the IAAF World Athletics Finals was held in Louis II .
