The Stade Saint-Symphorien is a football stadium in Longeville-lès-Metz , France , on the southwestern city limits of Metz . The soccer club FC Metz plays its home games here. Like the Moselle island on which it is located, the sports facility was named after St. Symphorianus , a Christian martyr of the 2nd century .
history
The Stade Saint-Symphorien opened on September 11, 1923. FC Metz played their first game against Stade Rennes . Initially the capacity was 10,000 spectators, four years later it was expanded to 15,000 and at the end of the 1990s it was expanded to 26,700. In 2001 the renovation work on the stadium was completed. Since then, the stadium has had a capacity of 25,636 spectators. All places are equipped with seats. During the games, the local fan groups of FC Metz convert the areas behind the goals into standing room. In 1991 a record number of visitors was set at the game between FC Metz and Olympique Marseille . At that time there were 28,766 spectators in the stadium.
After returning to Ligue 1 , FC Metz presented plans for the renovation of the stadium at the end of May 2019. The preparations lasted around a year. The building permit was obtained in February 2019. After the last home game of the season on May 17th, the plastic seats on the south stand were dismantled. The demolition of the audience area began on May 27th. The new building in its place should be ready for use in August 2020, just in time for the start of the 2020/21 season. The number of VIP seats will be increased from 2,239 to 4,500. A year later, the southern corners of the stadium will be closed. The south tier, including the corners, will offer 7955 seats. Overall, the stadium will add 3300 seats and will seat 30,000 spectators after completion. The renovation is intended to make the overall appearance of the Stade Saint-Symphorien more uniform. In the course of the renovation, the access control as well as the sound and lighting system are to be completely renewed. The costs should be around 60 million euros , of which FC Metz will bear 75.8 percent. The rest of the sum will be raised equally by the Grand Est region , the city of Metz and the Moselle department .
Directions
The stadium is easy to reach by public transport, by bus and metro. It is located about 10 minutes from the main train station.
