Symphorianus
The holy Symphorian and Timotheus (* in Autun , † around 178 ) was a Christian martyr . His (Protestant, Roman Catholic and Armenian) memorial day is August 22nd . He is the patron saint of falconers and was invoked by cripples and against the drought . The name Symphorianus is of Greek origin and means the useful .
The story of the suffering of Symphorianus was recorded in the 5th century. He is said to have been the son of a nobleman named Faustus. When the still youthful Symphorianus mocked pagan cults, he was arrested and - since he did not revoke - finally beheaded. On the way to the execution his mother is said to have encouraged him to be steadfast. Euphronius von Autun had a basilica built at the alleged place of execution in the middle of the 5th century, which was destroyed in 1806.
Many places in France are named after Saint Symphorianus (see Saint-Symphorien ), as the martyr was very venerated in the early Middle Ages. There was also a St. Symphorian monastery in Trier , which was destroyed in 882 during the Norman storm. Jean Auguste Dominique Ingres depicted the martyrdom of St. Symphorianus in a painting.
