The Stade Matmut-Atlantique (short: Matmut-Atlantique , also known as Stade Bordeaux-Atlantique ) is a football stadium in the Lac district in the north of the French city of Bordeaux , Gironde department . It is mainly used by the Girondins Bordeaux football club . Since construction was completed in May 2015, there are 42,115 spectators available. There are a total of 4,400 business seats, 1,000 of them in 60 boxes, 200 press seats and 125 wheelchair-accessible seats and the same number of seats for companions.

history

Work on the site started on November 4, 2012. Construction was divided into eight sections. Work on the foundation began in early 2013. The foundation stone of the new stadium was laid on April 15, 2013 in the presence of Mayor Alain Juppé . The Swiss architects Jacques Herzog and Pierre de Meuron (architects Herzog & de Meuron ) are responsible for the design. Among other things, you designed the Allianz Arena in Munich , the Beijing National Stadium and the St. Jakob Park in Basel . The Nouveau Stade de Bordeaux replaced the old Stade Jacques-Chaban-Delmas as the Girondins venue and is also the venue for four group matches and a quarter-final match of the 2016 European Football Championship .

In addition to football matches, rugby matches and concerts are also held at the Stade Matmut-Atlantique. The semi-finals of the French Rugby Union Championship 2014/15 took place in the new building on June 5 and 6, 2015 . In addition, individual games of the rugby union club Union Bordeaux Bègles are played. For the longer playing field required for rugby games, four rows of mobile seats were installed on the lower tiers of the back-end stands, which enable 1,000 temporary seats to be converted within seven hours.

The game on the 38th and final day of Ligue 1 2014/15 on May 23, 2015 against HSC Montpellier was selected as the opening game .

The Bordeaux stadium hosted the 2017/18 Coupe de la Ligue final . Paris Saint-Germain beat AS Monaco 3-0. The semi-finals of the French Rugby Union Championship took place again in Bordeaux in the 2018/19 season . In addition, the Stade Matmut-Atlantique is planned as the venue for the Rugby Union World Cup in 2023 and for football games at the Summer Olympics in Paris in 2024 .

Surname

The name Grand Stade de Bordeaux was the preliminary name for the venue. To cover the construction costs, the rights should be sold to a name sponsor . Since no financially strong sponsor could be found by mid-March 2015, the new building was inaugurated when it opened in May 2015 under the name Nouveau stade de Bordeaux .

At the beginning of September 2015, the French insurance company Matmut ( Mutuelle d'assurance des travailleurs mutualistes ) acquired the naming rights to the 2016 European Championship stadium for ten years until 2025. In future it will be called Stade Matmut-Atlantique . Both sides agreed not to disclose the amount of the contract. The name was applied to a large area on the stadium roof.

financing

The estimated construction costs of 183 million euros were covered by a public-private partnership (PPP).

  • Other funds
    • Girondins Bordeaux and the TV channel M6 : EUR 20 million
    • The city of Bordeaux: 6.7 million euros (annually over 30 years) of which 3.85 million euros consist of Girondin's annual rent.
    • Sale of the stadium's naming rights to a sponsor: approx. 15 million euros

Games for the European Football Championship 2016

On the occasion of the 2016 European Football Championship in France, five games were played in the Stade de Bordeaux. To avoid conflicts of interest with UEFA sponsors, the stadium will be named Stade de Bordeaux during the tournament .
