The Stade Mayol is a rugby and football stadium in the French city of Toulon in the Var department . It is located on the edge of the city center, in the immediate vicinity of the ferry terminal. The stadium, which opened in 1920, is the home of the rugby union club RC Toulon , which is represented in the top 14 league . It can seat 15,500 spectators and is named after the singer Félix Mayol from Toulon .
history
In 1919 Félix Mayol offered RC Toulon to finance a new stadium. The groundbreaking was on July 26th of the same year. The opening was celebrated on March 28, 1920 with a football and rugby game. As early as 1921, the city administration planned to demolish the stadium. It is only a temporary facility and the area should instead be used for a cycling track . The discussions dragged on for several years until these plans were finally abandoned in 1936.
During an Allied air raid on November 23, 1943, 53 bombs fell on the stadium and caused great damage. The stands were renovated in 1947 and 1965 (when the stadium became the property of the city). While the football club Sporting Toulon has only played sporadically here since 1955 (opening of the Stade de Bon Rencontre ), the final of the Tournoi de Toulon has been held in the Stade Mayol since 1975 . In 1983 the grandstands were completely rebuilt and their capacity expanded. Since 1990 there has been a shopping center right next to the stadium.
