The Top 14 is the top division of men in French rugby union . It was introduced for the 2001/02 season under the name Top 16 and replaced the previous top French rugby union league. It is a professional league and is organized by the Ligue Nationale de Rugby (on behalf of the French Ministry of Sports and the French rugby association, Fédération Française de Rugby ). 14 teams are involved, before the 2004/05 season there were 16 (hence the former name Top 16).

overview

In the top 14, in the league system in which every club competes against every other club in home and away matches, the six participants of the play-offs , who also form the six French participants in the Heineken Cup , the highest European cup competition, are played out. The French rugby champion is determined by the play-offs at the end of regular time. All other eight teams that did not qualify for the Heineken Cup automatically take part in the second European Cup competition called the Amlin Challenge Cup . The last two teams are relegated to the Pro D2 at the end of the season , which has been the second highest division below the top 14 since 2000.

The first French championship was held in 1892; the Racing Club de France won against Stade Français . Over a century later, these two Parisian teams are the only ones from the north of the country to play in a professional league, Stade Français and Racing 92 , the 2001 merger successor to the Racing Club. All others come from the south, with the south-west clearly predominating.

Traditionally, the former first French league as well as the top 16 until 2004 had multiple tracks with up to four groups and consisted of several phases. In the Top 16, the teams were divided into two groups of eight teams each. A second phase followed, in which the four best in each group played for a place in the semi-finals, the four worse classified in each group against relegation. In the 2004/05 season , the league was single-track.

At the end of the season, the six best teams carry out an additional round for the championship title. Here, the third-placed team plays against the fifth-placed team after the main round and the fourth-placed team against the sixth-placed team, with the better-placed team enjoying home rights. The first and second placed receive a bye. In the semifinals, the winner of a "quarter-finals" who was placed worse than the second winner of a "quarter finals" will be played by the winner. This plays against the runner-up. The semi-finals take place on neutral ground. The two winners contest the final.

The championship trophy is the Bouclier de Brennus . The championship final took place in different locations until 1973, then until 1997 in the Parc des Princes in Paris, and since then in the Stade de France in Saint-Denis . At the end of a season, the two worst teams are relegated, while the two best of Rugby Pro D2 are promoted.

The attendance record for a game in the Top 14 is 79,619, set on October 14, 2006 at the Stade de France for a game between Stade Français and Biarritz Olympique. This is around 20,000 more than in any other championship, including Ligue 1 in football . The record champions are Stade Toulousain from Toulouse with a total of 20 championship titles.
