history
Lyon OU is one of the oldest sports clubs in France and one of the first to set up a rugby division outside Paris. The club was originally called Racing Club and was formed in 1896 from the merger of the Racing Club de Vaise and the Rugby Club de Lyon . He changed his name to Racing et Cercles Réunis in 1902 after several other sports clubs had joined them. A few months later the club was renamed Lyon Olympique and finally in 1910 Lyon Olympique Universitaire . In 1934, the rugby department of local rivals FC Lyon joined LOU.
The rugby team celebrated their greatest successes in the early 1930s. She reached the championship finals for the first time in 1931, but in which she was defeated by RC Toulon . In 1932, Lyon OU won the final against RC Narbonne for themselves and repeated this success the following year against the same team. In addition, he won the prestigious Yves du Manoir Challenge in 1933 .
Lyon OU slipped into midfield after these successes, but reached the semi-finals of the championship four times (1937, 1949, 1951, 1959). Later, the team played for several decades in the amateur leagues and in 2002 made it to the second professional league. In 2011 they were promoted to the top 14 league, but after only one season the team had to relegate again. In 2014 he was able to climb back into the top 14.
