Brown started his bass playing career in a student band. In 1966 he returned across the Atlantic to complete his studies (1969, BA in Sociology). In 1974, Sheila Jordan brought Brown to the scene around the free jazz pioneers Roswell Rudd and Beaver Harris . In 1975 he replaced Jimmy Garrison in Archie Shepps quintet . Shortly thereafter, he was playing with Harris' 360 Degree Music Experience .

From 1979 he was a member of the then legendary Don Pullen / George Adams Quartet for almost 9 years , until it was dissolved shortly after the untimely death of drummer Dannie Richmond (who was temporarily replaced by Lewis Nash ). He also played with Art Blakeys Jazz Messengers , in Dewey Redman's band from 1989 and with various bands from Shepp, Cherry, Rudd and Richmond. He has also appeared with Ted Curson , Lee Konitz , Chet Baker , Joe Lovano , Mal Waldron , Ricky Ford , Steve Grossman , Betty Carter , Rita Marcotulli and the John Hicks Trio, Etta Jones and Jane Ira Bloom or was on recordings of involved. He currently works frequently with the German vibraphonist Wolfgang Lackerschmidt and in a duo with Sheila Jordan, but is also on the road with his quartet (with Jordan and Don Byron ).

Brown can be heard on more than 80 records and CDs. His first recording as a leader, however, was only in 2003 with his group The Hear and Now featuring Dewey Redman. Further recordings followed in 2011 ( Here and How! Volume 2! On OmniTone ), with Sheila Jordan , Dave Ballou and Leon Parker .
