Rita Marcotulli (born March 10, 1959 in Rome ) is an Italian jazz pianist .

Live and act

Marcotulli comes from a musical family (one of her sisters is an opera singer ). She studied classical piano at the Conservatorio di Santa Cecilia in Rome. She has been part of the Italian jazz scene since the early 1980s, performing with Chet Baker , Peter Erskine , Steve Grossman , Joe Henderson , Hélène Labarrière , Joe Lovano , Sal Nistico , Kenny Wheeler , Norma Winstone and Andy Sheppard . In 1988 and 1989 she was part of Billy Cobham's group . Between 1994 and 1997, she and the singer Maria Pia De Vito explored the merging of Neapolitan songs and other Mediterranean melodies with jazz in the Nauplia project . She then played with Dewey Redman (CD Live in London ), but also in the quartet of Palle Danielsson (with Charlie Mariano and Marilyn Mazur ). In 1996 she performed in a duo with Pat Metheny , but also in a trio with her piano colleagues Paul Bley and John Taylor . She accompanied the singer Pino Daniele and the songwriter Gianmaria Testa . She was also invited to the recording studio by Michel Portal and Enrico Rava .

Since 2006 she has appeared in various formations with the guitarist Nguyên Lê , e. B. 2006 as a duo and since 2008 as the Nguyên Lê Quartet together with the Canadian bassist Chris Jennings and alternately with the drummers Danny Gottlieb and Roberto Gatto .

She has written film scores and compositions for dance theater. In 1987 she was named the best young talent in the poll of Musica Jazz magazine . In 2010 she won the Nastro d'argento for best film music for her work on Basilicata Coast to Coast .
