Maria Pia De Vito (born August 17, 1960 in Naples ) is an Italian jazz musician ( vocals , composition , arrangement ).

Live and act

After taking lessons in opera and modern singing, Pia de Vito began in 1976 as a singer and guitarist (later also as a pianist) in groups dedicated to the music of the Mediterranean and the Balkans . Since 1980 she has been dealing with jazz as a singer. She has been with musicians like John Taylor , Ralph Towner , Kenny Wheeler , Enrico Rava , Paolo Fresu , Gianluigi Trovesi , Henning Sieverts , Joe Zawinul , Michael Brecker , Miroslav Vitouš , Dave Liebman , Joshua Redman , Cameron Brown , Billy Hart , Gary Bartz , Steve Turré , and the Art Ensemble of Chicago . Between 1994 and 1997 she explored the merging of Neapolitan songs and other Mediterranean melodies with jazz with the pianist Rita Marcotulli in the Nauplia project . In recent years she has worked frequently with the British composer Colin Towns and has also recorded with his Mask Orchestra ; she had a leading role in Giorgio Gaslini's Ugly Duckling . Tumulti is a duo project with percussionist Patrice Héral . With her Songs from the Underground , she deals with songs by Leonard Cohen , Jimi Hendrix , Elvis Costello , Joni Mitchell and Sting .

De Vito has performed at numerous festivals in southern and central Europe as well as on the British Isles, but has also given concerts at Birdland and the Performing Theater in New York City . She also works with the sculptor and video artist Marisa Albanese .
