Gianluigi Trovesi (born January 10, 1944 in Nembro , Bergamo province ) is an Italian jazz musician ( saxophone and clarinet ).

Live and act

Gianluigi Trovesi is one of the most famous contemporary Italian jazz musicians. With his music, Trovesi stands for a folkloric colored, European jazz, which refers to the classical heritage as well as the diverse European folk music .

Already in his childhood and youth Trovesi was a member of a church choir and a choir that cultivated the tradition of the Italian folk song (Canti di Montagna: mountain songs). He played the clarinet at an early age and performed with a trio at dance events.

After attending school, he studied composition , counterpoint and clarinet at the Bergamo Conservatory of Music (graduated in 1966). After completing his studies, Trovesi took part in performances of classical music and worked in dance and jazz bands. At times he taught music. From 1977 on he was a member of the Giorgio Gaslini Quintet, at the same time founded his own jazz trio that combined folk music and jazz. In 1978 he won first prize in the saxophone and clarinet sections of the Italian national music competition and became a member of the Broadcasting Big Band in Milan .

In the period that followed, the first recordings were made and he undertook his first tours, e.g. in Germany. B. with Manfred Schoof , Peter Kowald and Gunter “Baby” Sommer . Trovesi was influenced by the current trends in free jazz in the 1970s . An invitation to the “Clarinet Summit” from Joachim Ernst Berendt made him known far beyond Italy. During this time, Trovesis returned to his classical training and the rich treasure trove of Italian art and folk music, which he integrated into his work as a jazz musician as well as musical trends of the 20th century. Trovesi continued to play in the Milan Broadcasting Big Band, but also received numerous invitations to concerts and festival appearances in Europe, taught temporarily at the Stockholm University of Music and participated in the European Broadcasting Big Band.

In the early 1980s he won several jazz competitions and awards for his recordings. He performed with musicians from the European jazz scene such as Albert Mangelsdorff , Michel Portal , Enrico Rava , Louis Sclavis and Keith Tippett , and increasingly with improvisers such as Anthony Braxton , Misha Mengelberg , Steve Lacy , Han Bennink , Mark Dresser , Tony Oxley , Horace Tapscott , Evan Parker and Kenny Wheeler . In 1991 he became a member of the " Italian Unabile Orchestra ".

In 1993, Milan's Broadcasting Big Band was disbanded and Trovesi concentrated entirely on his own composition and musician practice. Finally he founded his own octet , which won the Italian jazz prize (best CD of the year) with its first recording (CD “From G to G”, 1992). In 1993 the band was named the best Italian jazz ensemble. The CD received five stars in the renowned American jazz magazine Down Beat , and thanks to this broad response, Trovesi gained international recognition. Ever since the album Les Hommes Armés (1997), the “Gianluigi Trovesi Octet” has been known for its enormous virtuosity, improvisational art and the skilful fusion of jazz, folk and serious music of the past and the present.

He also worked in the 1990s in a duo with the accordionist Gianni Coscia , called Radici , who also released albums in the following decade, and in a trio with Patrick Vaillant and Riccardo Tesi . In 1998 his breathtaking Around Small Fairy Tales was released on the Soul Note label . The following year he continued his fascinating series of releases with Round About a Midsummer's Dream (in nonet) and in 2003 with Fugace (in octet). In 2012 he played as a guest with the Ensemble FisFüz on Papillons . He then worked with the trio of Israeli pianist Anat Fort for the album Birdwatching and with Annette Mayes Vinograd Express . In 2018 he published Mediterraneamente , composed as a quintet with guitarist Paolo Manzolini, bassist Marco Esposito , drummer Vittorio Marinoni and percussionist Fulvio Maras. In 2019, the album La misteriosa musica della Regina Loana was released , on which he recorded music together with Gianni Coscia that, like a kind of requiem, recalled his friend Umberto Eco, who died in 2016, and his novel The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana .
