Italian Unstable Orchestra

The Italian Unabile Orchestra is a large orchestral jazz ensemble from Italy .

The Italian Unabile Orchestra was founded in 1990 by the trumpeter Pino Minafra and the poet Vittorio Curci , with the intention not to commit to a band leader or to a fixed group style ("Unabile"). With regard to the last point, there are similarities to the Vienna Art Orchestra or the early Willem Breuker Kollektief . There are also parallels to the " folklore imaginaire " of the Lyons ARFI musicians ( Louis Sclavis , but also Maurice Merle and Patrick Vollat ); So an approach to act between free improvisations , folk material and formally arranged compositions. The free jazz experiences of the older players are also processed, each time further developed by the musical ideas of the younger players in the ensemble. A forerunner of this group in Italy was the Andrea Centazzo Mitteleuropa Orchestra (1980-1983), in which also played some musicians who later belonged to the Italian Unabile Orchestra .

The orchestra is organized on a grassroots basis and has no nominal leader. The respective project managers receive a mandate for the repertoire to be worked on. Your ideas, compositions or arrangements are discussed in the orchestra before the decision is made whether to include them in the program. The project manager steps forward during the concert, directs his contribution, and then subordinates himself to the community in solidarity. This creates a creative breadth.

The band is a gathering place for the most important musicians of the Italian jazz avant-garde . The line-up differs from that of a conventional big band : A strong brass section is set against three strings, including a cello, and the percussion is doubled. Permanent members from 1991 to 1999 were Alberto Mandarini , Claudio Rossi , Carlo Actis Dato - the three musicians also form the Brasserie Trio  - as well as Pino Minafra, Guido Mazzon , Giancarlo Schiaffini , Sebi Tramontana , Martin Mayes , Mario Schiano , Eugenio Colombo , Danile Cavallanti, Gianluigi Trovesi , Renato Geremia, Paolo Damiani , Vincenzo Mazzone and Tiziano Tonnoni. Pianist Giorgio Gaslini was replaced by Umberto Petrin in 1996 , bassist Bruno Tommaso by Giovanni Maier in 1998 . Musicians such as Cecil Taylor , Enrico Rava , Lester Bowie and Antonello Salis also played with the orchestra as guests .
