Sebastiano "Sebi" Tramontana (born December 12, 1960 in Rosolini , Sicily ) is an Italian trombonist of avant-garde jazz and improvised music .

Live and act

Sebi Tramontana began playing the guitar as a child and switched to the soprano saxophone in the late 1970s. In 1982 the trombone became his main instrument; During this time he worked with Bruno Tommaso on a radio production. This is how he met Giancarlo Schiaffini , who made him move to Rome and study at the A. Casella Conservatorio in L'Aquila. In Rome he worked with Martin Joseph , Eugenio Colombo and Mario Schiano ; in 1986 he was a member of the New Talents Orchestra , which performed at the Rocella Jonica Festival . In 1987 he founded a trio with Daniel Studer and Roberto Altamura , with whom he performed at the Controindicazioni Festival in Rome; during this time he also worked with Paul Rutherford , Barry Guy , Gérard Siracusa , Eugenio Colombo, Co Streiff and Martin Mayes . In 1988 Mario Schiano invited him to record for the record label Red ; there were then recordings with Vladimir Tarasov and Vladimir Chekassin . In 1990 he continued his studies at the A. In 1992 he had his first solo appearances in Rome, followed by guest appearances in Zurich, Mulhouse, Cologne and Göttingen. In 1994 he worked on Georg Gräwe's project Two Nights Of Random Acoustics in Cologne, also played in his quintet and toured Europe with him. In 1998 he made duo recordings with Graewe for the Italian Splasc (h) label; in July 2003 he worked again with Graewe in his new quintet, with Tobias Delius , Kent Kessler and Michael Vatcher .

In 1996 Tramontana performed at the Roccella Jonica Festival with Barre Phillips , Michel Doneda and two dancers; then at the Victoriaville Festival with Mario Schiano, Evan Parker , Paul Lovens and Barry Guy . At the Empty Bottle jazz club in Chicago, he appeared alongside Hamid Drake , Kent Kessler , Ken Vandermark and Mars Williams . In 1997 he played in the Art Of Dialogue series in Munich with Joëlle Léandre .

In 1999, the City of Munich gave him the opportunity to spend six weeks in the United States; During this time he visited Chicago, performed at the Empty Bottle Festival and made recordings with Jim Baker, Fred Lonberg-Holm , Michael Zerang , Lou Mallozzi , Jeb Bishop, Ken Vandermark and Kent Kessler; he has also performed in San Francisco and New York. From 1999 to 2002 he was artistic director of the Come Sunday festival in Munich ; During this time he founded the XAXA formation with Phil Wachsmann , Mats Gustafsson and Paul Lovens .

In 2001 Tramontana worked in Chicago with the Night People project (as a tribute to Dickie Wells ), with a string quartet with clarinetist Guillermo Gregorio and in duo with Jeb Bishop. He also played in a duo with Paul Lovens (in the Buster Keaton The General project ), performed in Munich, Ljubljana , Graz , Cologne, Regensburg, Rome, Maribor, Kassel and Göttingen. In 2002/03 he was a member of Mats Gustafsson's Nu Ensemble .

In 2003 he performed at the Banlieues Bleues Festival near Paris and in Ghent with Joëlle Léandres European Quartet with Carlos Zingaro , Paul Lovens and Irène Schweizer as a guest . He played in a duo with Léandre at the Ulrichsberg Kaleidophon Festival and appeared with a trombone trio in Ljubljana and Maribor, in which Vinko Globokar and Hannes Bauer were involved.

Since 1999 Sebi Tramontana toured frequently through Germany and Austria and worked with the actor and television writer Udo Wachtveitl . Since 2001 he has played as a musician and actor for the dance company En Knap by Iztok Kovac from Ljubljana . He also appeared in the 2004 film Under my skin by director Saso Podgorsek . In 2004 he also worked with the Electronic 48 nord group in Munich.

In November 2004 he exhibited his paintings in Chicago in an exhibition with works by musicians under the title Stop, Look & Listen with works by Pee Wee Russel, Hal Rammel, Han Bennink, Peter Brötzmann and others.
