Banlieues Bleues

Banlieues Bleues is a jazz festival that takes place every year from March to mid-April in the Seine-Saint-Denis department near Paris .

History of the festival

The Banlieues Bleues Festival was founded in 1984, initially traded as Jazz en Aulnoye and was then organized under a new name by various municipalities in the department. So occurred u. a. Max Roach and Dizzy Gillespie as a duo in March 1989 at the Maison de la Culture de la Seine in Bobigny . In 1990 Eddy Louiss put together a 70-piece Multicolor Feeling Fanfare Orchestra.

Since 2006 the festival has been held in the La Dynamo venue in Pantin for forms of jazz and improvised music; further events take place in 15 communes of the department such as Aubervilliers , Gonesse , Le Blanc-Mesnil , Saint-Ouen , Stains or Tremblay-en-France . Numerous live recordings of the festival were released on DVD and audio carrier. The long-time organizer Jacques Pornon handed over the reins to Xavier Lemettre in 2001.

The festival is financed by the General Council of Seine-Saint-Denis, the cantons, the Conseil régional of the Île de France region and the Ministry of Culture. Banlieues Bleues , which has now developed into one of the largest music festivals in the greater Paris area, takes place in 2012 with performances by artists such as McCoy Tyner , Joe Lovano , Nicole Mitchell , François Corneloup , Bruno Chevillon , Bernard Lubat , Marc Ribot , Romano / Sclavis / Texier , Bojan Z and Nguyên Lê . The Art Ensemble of Chicago celebrates its 35th anniversary there. The Orchester National de Jazz also plays under the direction of Claude Barthélemy .
