Ernst Reijseger (born November 13, 1954 in Bussum , Netherlands) is a Dutch cellist . He plays avant-garde jazz , new music and improvised music .

Reijseger started playing the cello at the age of eight. He was tutored by Anner Bylsma . Since the early 1970s his interest has been in improvisation. He gained relevant experience with Derek Bailey , Martin van Duynhoven , Alan Purves and Gerry Hemingway ( Demon Chaser 1993), among others . He has performed in Europe with Burton Greene , Sean Bergin and with dance and theater groups. During the 1980s he played in the Amsterdam String Trio , the Theo Loevendie Consort, the Guus Janssen septet , the Arcado String Trio and the Instant Composers Pool orchestra .

At the end of the 1980s, Reijseger founded the trio Clusone 3 together with saxophonist Michael Moore and drummer Han Bennink , with whom he recorded six CDs; he also performed with Joëlle Léandre , Albert Mangelsdorff , Louis Sclavis , Georg Graewe ( The View from Points West 1991), Simon Nabatov , Ig Henneman , Boi Akih , Trilok Gurtu and Mola Sylla . He was also involved in various world music projects with musicians from Sardinia , Turkey , Iran , the Moluccas and Argentina .

Reijseger has also written film music in recent years , especially for films by Werner Herzog .

Awards

In 1985 Reijseger was awarded the Boy Edgar Prize . In 1995 he received the Bird Award at the North Sea Jazz Festival . In 2019 he was awarded the Werner Herzog Film Prize by the Werner Herzog Foundation .
