Anner Bylsma

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Anner Bylsma (born February 17, 1934 in The Hague ; † July 25, 2019 in Amsterdam ) was a Dutch cellist who specialized in music in historical performance practice . He played both modern and historic cellos, including an instrument attributed to the Italian master Matteo Goffriller .

Surname

Anner Bylsma was originally called Anne Bijlsma . Since the feminine-sounding first name Anne was often irritating, he later called himself Anner . The surname Bijlsma with the Dutch pronunciation [ ˈbɛɫsma ] is mostly spelled Bylsma internationally . This spelling adjustment was a marketing decision to make pronunciation easier for the English-speaking audience.

Life

Anner Bylsma received his first cello lessons from his father. From 1950 to 1955 he studied with Carel van Leeuwen Boomkamp at the Koninklijk Conservatorium The Hague . Two years after graduating, he won the Prix d'excellence .

From 1958 Anner Bylsma worked as a solo cellist at the Nederlandse Opera in Amsterdam. The following year he won the Pablo Casals competition in Mexico. From 1962 he was the youngest solo cellist and principal cellist of the Concertgebouw Orchestra for six years . In 1970 he became a lecturer at the Conservatories of Amsterdam and The Hague . As a guest lecturer, he was also associated with the Berlin University of the Arts , the Conservatoire de Paris and the Juilliard School .

After a first marriage to Lucy van Dael, Anner Bylsma was married to the violinist Vera Beths . With Vera Beths, the violist Jürgen Kussmaul and - if necessary - other musicians, he formed the Ensemble L'Archibudelli , which performed string music on historical instruments.

An illness caused Bylsma to finally give up playing the cello in 2005. He continued to give masterclasses afterwards, for example in 2014 when he was 80 years old.
