action

Researcher Laura Sommerfeld travels to South America on behalf of the United Nations to investigate a mysterious environmental catastrophe on the Bolivian Diablo Blanco. At the airport, the professor and the colleagues who are accompanying her are kidnapped and taken to a hacienda. Through an encounter with two blind boys, she becomes aware of the environmental pollution in Bolivia and the ever-expanding salt lakes. She realizes that Matt Riley, the CEO of a powerful consortium, is responsible for this environmental disaster. First she learns of the impending eruption of a nearby super volcano , then she is left alone with two small, blind boys in the middle of the salt desert.

production

Shooting began in April 2015 and took place at an altitude of 4,200 meters in the Salar de Uyuni salt flats in southern Bolivia, the largest salt desert in the world with more than 10,000 square kilometers. Filming ended on May 19, 2015. In this area there are indeed super volcanoes, such as the active Uturuncu and four other calderas such as the Vilama Caldera .

On February 1, 2016 it was announced that the independent record label Winter & Winter would release a soundtrack album for the film on March 18, 2016. It contains the music of Ernst Reijseger , who had already worked with Herzog on the films The Cave of Forgotten Dreams , The White Diamond , The Wild Blue Yonder and A Caring Son .

The film was produced by Construction Filmproduktion , Skellig Rock and Benaroya Pictures . Co-producers were ZDF and Arte France Cinema.

The film premiered on June 12, 2016 at the Shanghai International Film Festival . In October 2016 a screening took place as part of the Hof International Film Festival . The film was released in German cinemas on December 8, 2016 as part of the Camino Film Distribution program. A theatrical release in the US will be on April 7, 2017.

reception

Reviews

The film has so far won over 32 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics .

The Hollywood Reporter's Deborah Young sums it up: Too much salt, too little pepper.

Oliver Kaever from Spiegel Online says about Ferres that she is simply not up to her role and has no recognizable dramatic register. She just seems annoyed and in a bad mood in every scene, says Kaever, but it is not her fault that the film does not work, but that of Herzog. The director neither pursues an idea, nor tells a story, nor does he find a cinematic form. Kaever's colleague Hannah Pilarczyk, on the other hand, says that the work of a German filmmaker has not been as wonderfully unleashed as Salt and Fire for a long time.

Andreas Busche from Die Zeit recognizes a narrative of the omnipotence of nature in the film, which Herzog is fascinated by, and emphasizes the second half of the film in particular. The director feels noticeably more comfortable in the open landscape than in closed rooms.
