Encounters at the End of the World is a 2007 documentary by Werner Herzog . The film tells of people and places in Antarctica and celebrated its world premiere on September 1, 2007 at the Telluride Film Festival .

Herzog and the Austrian cameraman Peter Zeitlinger go to Antarctica to meet the people who live and work there, as well as to visit some of the most remarkable places on the continent. The start is at the McMurdo station on the southern tip of Ross Island . Other destinations include the original station of Ernest Shackleton , the South Pole and Mount Erebus .

criticism

The film was received above average by critics. For example, the American film critic Roger Ebert wrote : “A poem of peculiar beauty. Herzog is a unique filmmaker; his film takes us into a world that is considerably larger and more whimsical than our own. The underwater shots alone would have been enough for the film, but it offers so much more. ”The industry journal Variety spoke of“ Herzog's best film ”, which offered“ pure enjoyment ”.

Awards

Werner Herzog's film was nominated for the Documentary Film Award at the 81st Academy Awards in 2009, but it fell behind James Marsh's Man on Wire . Further nominations followed at the American Gotham Awards , Independent Spirit Awards and Satellite Awards .
