The cast of the film Slumdog Millionaire at the 81st Academy Awards

The nominations were announced in Beverly Hills on January 22, 2009 by Sid Ganis , President of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences , and Oscar-winning American actor Forest Whitaker . As expected, Danny Boyle's Slumdog Millionaire won the award ceremony as the most successful film of the year . The drama, highly praised by critics as the Indian variant of Oliver Twist , focuses on a young Indian (played by Dev Patel ) from the slums of Mumbai . He gets the chance to be a candidate in the Indian version of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? to occur. The film won eight out of ten possible awards, in addition to the Best Film category, among other awards, the awards for best director, camera and best screenplay. The literary film adaptation, The Strange Case of Benjamin Button by David Fincher , won only three prizes in secondary categories. The drama about a man who ages backwards is based on the story of the same name by F. Scott Fitzgerald and had led the field of favorites ahead of Slumdog Millionaire with thirteen mentions . The two political dramas Milk (8 nominations, 2 prizes) and Frost / Nixon (5 nominations, no prize) by US directors Ron Howard and Gus Van Sant as well as Stephen Daldry's literary adaptation The Reader (5 nominations , 1st Prize).

Christopher Nolan's Batman film adaptation, The Dark Knight , which was nominated eight times for a trophy, had almost only been considered in technical categories beforehand and won the award for the best sound editing. Heath Ledger , who died in January 2008, was also awarded the Oscar , which is the second posthumous prize since it was awarded to Peter Finch in 1977 . For his performance as Joker Ledger had already received several awards in the current American film award season, including the Golden Globe. His family accepted the award on their behalf. As expected, the British Kate Winslet prevailed as the best leading actress, who had competed for the film award five times in vain in the past. For her role as Hanna Schmitz in Der Vorleser , she was able to leave the American Meryl Streep behind, who had received her fifteenth nomination for her portrait of a malicious nun on the question of faith and is thus the most nominated actress at the Academy Awards. Sean Penn won the Academy Award for Best Actor for his performance as gay politician and civil rights activist Harvey Milk . It was the second award for Penn after winning the 2004 Oscar for Mystic River . Among other things, he prevailed against the co-favorite Golden Globe winner Mickey Rourke ( The Wrestler ). Penélope Cruz was the first Spanish actress to receive an Oscar. Her supporting role in Woody Allen's comedy Vicky Cristina Barcelona was honored .

Uli Edel's Der Baader Meinhof Complex from Germany and Götz Spielmann's Revenche from Austria were among the five candidates for the best foreign language film of the year . The RAF drama and the crime film competed for the Oscar together with Laurent Cantet's Goldene Palme prize winner Die Klasse from France and the documentary animated film Waltz with Bashir by Israeli Ari Folman , but had a share of the Japanese entry Nokan - Die Kunst des Ausklangs (English-language Title Departures ) by Yōjirō Takita losing out. Japan was able to secure the award after eleven unsuccessful nominations. On the other hand, the Berlin up-and-coming director Jochen Alexander Freydank won the prize in the Best Short Film category for Toy Land , in which the Swiss Reto Caffi ( On the Line ) was also represented. The German director Werner Herzog competed unsuccessfully with his Antarctic documentary Encounters at the End of the World in the category of Best Documentary .

The award-winning portrayal of British actress Sally Hawkins ( Happy-Go-Lucky ), who was awarded the Golden Globe for best comedy actress, could not achieve a nomination in advance . Even Clint Eastwood did for his age role of a disgruntled war veterans in Gran Torino denied an Oscar nomination. Likewise, could Bruce Springsteen with his Golden Globe-winning song for The Wrestler not place among the three nominated film songs. On the other hand, Sam Mendes ' drama Times of Turmoil , for which Kate Winslet had received the Golden Globe for best drama actress, came with only three nominations in secondary categories, but remained unprivileged. Winslet was preferred for her role in The Reader .
