Peter Brian Gabriel (born February 13, 1950 in Chobham, Surrey Heath ) is a British musician , composer and songwriter , video artist and humanitarian activist . He became known in the early 1970s as a singer, front man and founding member of the then progressive rock band Genesis . He also plays the flute , oboe and keyboards .

After leaving Genesis in the fall of 1975, he started a successful solo career. The focus was on the production and promotion of world music , both his own music and that of other artists. He also played a pioneering role in the field of digitally edited music. His music, a mix of pop and rock that cannot be clearly categorized, with progressive elements and clear influences from world music, he presented lavishly in spectacular videos and conceptually choreographed live shows.

Peter Gabriel is committed to human rights , including at Amnesty International and the human rights organization Witness, which he co-founded .

1967-1975: Genesis

Gabriel as "Britannia" (Dancing With The Moonlit Knight) , 1974

In 1967 Gabriel formed the band Genesis while at the Charterhouse School with classmates Tony Banks , Anthony Phillips , Mike Rutherford and drummer Chris Stewart . The band name was a suggestion by Jonathan King , who produced the first album From Genesis to Revelation . As a singer, Gabriel found inspiration in Nina Simone and Otis Redding .

With Gabriel's unusual stage presence, Genesis caused a sensation in the international music scene. He appeared in numerous bizarre costumes and introduced the songs with sarcastic, dream-like stories. His most famous costumes include "The Flower" and "Magog" (Supper's Ready) , "Britannia" (Dancing With The Moonlit Knight) , "The Old Man" (The Musical Box) and "Rael" and "The Slipperman" for the Concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway . The line-up of Genesis at that time included bassist and guitarist Mike Rutherford and keyboardist Tony Banks, guitarist Steve Hackett and drummer Phil Collins , who took over his position as front man after Gabriel left in 1975. While the band was on a world tour with the album The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway , Gabriel decided to leave the band after the last concert. His decision was influenced, among other things, by musical differences with his fellow musicians and the problematic birth of his daughter Anna. The separation from the band he processed two years later in the song Solsbury Hill .

1975–1976: preparation for a solo career

After leaving, Peter Gabriel decided to take a break and spent a lot of time self-exploration and playing the piano, yoga , growing vegetables and, last but not least, with his family. In 1976 he recorded first demos for a solo album with the participation of his former colleagues Phillips, Rutherford and Collins and later that year the recordings began in the USA.

1977–1985: Peter Gabriel I – IV

The debut album, simply titled Peter Gabriel , was released in 1977 and was produced by Bob Ezrin . The album is a hodgepodge of very different styles and it contains Gabriel's first big hit, Solsbury Hill . By and large, satisfied with the album, Gabriel considers the song Here Comes The Flood to be overproduced. At the beginning he refused to give his albums a title, whereupon fans and the press differentiated the first three albums with the unofficial names Car , Scratch and Melt . His fourth album, which was again only provided with the name of the artist in England, was released in the USA under the title Security .

For his second album, which was released in 1978, Gabriel worked with King Crimson guitarist Robert Fripp as a producer. It was much darker and more experimental than its predecessor and contained some elaborate compositions, but no hit. Gabriel wrote the song Exposure together with Robert Fripp. In 1979 the two recorded a new version of the song Here Comes The Flood for Fripp's album Exposure . Later versions of the piece, to be found on the German edition of the maxi single Biko (as Jetzt geht die Flut , 1980), on the compilation Shaking the Tree (1990) and on the live DVD Growing Up from 2003, follow this sparsely orchestrated version .

Gabriel in Oslo, 1978

The 1980 released third album contains the hit singles Games Without Frontiers ( Games without frontiers ) and Biko . What is striking about the album is the daring production, which used many unusual and groundbreaking recording methods and effects. The gated reverb drum sound popular in the 80s was used here for the first time, which derives its effect from a powerful reverb with an abruptly tearing reverb tail. At Gabriel's request, the drummers did not use any cymbals on this album ; Phil Collins played a simple pattern on the song Intruder , which gave Gabriel and his sound engineer Hugh Padgham enough space for sound experiments that led to the aforementioned effect. Later this drum sound became world famous with Collins' hit single In the Air Tonight . In addition, "Melt", as the album is called in reference to the cover graphics (Gabriel's flowing face), was the first officially released sound carrier on which a sampler can be heard with the Fairlight CMI .

For his third album, Gabriel offered various national subsidiaries of his record company to bring the album onto the market in the respective national language. But only the German showed interest. Because of the different linguistic rhythm, the text and music were re-recorded for the German version, and it was released under Ein deutsches Album . The German lyrics were contributed by Horst Königstein , who among other things also wrote lyrics for Udo Lindenberg .

In arduous and at times inconclusive recording sessions on his country estate in England, Gabriel's fourth release was created between 1981 and 1982, on which he himself co-produced alongside David Lord . On this album, which was released in the USA under the name Security , Gabriel used the Fairlight to a far greater extent than on the previous production. He used a variety of sampled sounds with percussion elements from non-Western cultures and other unusual instruments to create a vastly new world of sound. Despite the strange sound, the unusual instruments and the mostly gloomy lyrics, the album sold well and also contained a hit called Shock The Monkey , for which a groundbreaking video was made in terms of recording technology at the time. A version of this album was also released in German.

Gabriel toured extensively for each of the four albums, further expanding the stage show that he had already designed in a visually elaborate manner for Genesis. So he used artful props, combined with sophisticated show interludes, in which he z. B. hung freely from scaffolding over the stage, optically distorted with the help of mirrors and Fresnel lenses, and wore costumes and make-up. During the first tours Gabriel occasionally included Genesis songs in the program. The whole band had their heads shaved for a tour. During his tour in 1982/83, which was documented by the album Plays Live , Gabriel also appeared in the opening act for David Bowie and had to put up with the accusation of overshadowing Bowie's concerts due to his complex stage show.

In 1985, Gabriel's soundtrack to Alan Parker's film Birdy, based on the novel by William Wharton, was released . For the atmospheric, purely instrumental work, the musician partially recycled pieces from his third and fourth album.

1986–1994: The great successes

Until then received quite favorably by most critics and blessed with some hits, Gabriel broke the targets up to expectations eventually more than one when he with the album 1986 Sun landed a huge success. The work contained, among other things, the single release Sledgehammer , peppered with sexual innuendos , with which he ousted his ex-colleagues from Genesis and their hit Invisible Touch from first place in the US charts, the satirical Big Time , which was sung in a duet with Kate Bush Ballad Don't Give Up, about desperation and hope in the face of unemployment, and the love song In Your Eyes , which was later used on the soundtrack of Teen Lover .

Gabriel produced the album So with the Canadian Daniel Lanois , who is also known for his work with U2 . A very elaborate video was shot for Sledgehammer in collaboration with director Stephen R. Johnson , which won numerous awards at the MTV Video Awards in 1987. The video set a new standard in the music industry, as did the video for Big Time, which used entirely new animation and special effects.

He founded his own label Real World Records , whose first release in 1989 was the soundtrack Passion for Martin Scorsese's film The Last Temptation of Christ . The video for the album was made by Stefan Roloff . The work is seen by critics as the highlight of Gabriel's work in the field of world music and earned the musician a Grammy and a Golden Globe nomination. In addition, the music on the album is often used on German television as background music for TV documentaries about exotic locations.

In 1992, Gabriel's next studio album, Us , followed , which was also recorded with Daniel Lanois as a co-producer. The album deals with Gabriel's personal problems in recent years, the divorce of his first marriage and the distance to his first daughter. A very elaborate video was also shot for Digging in the Dirt that shows Gabriel being eaten by worms. The play is about an inner demon who tries to break a path. Once again, this video set new standards. Gabriel's efforts to get closer to his daughter were processed in the piece Come Talk to Me , in which Sinéad O'Connor sang a part.

Us could not quite build on the huge success of So , but Gabriel went on a world tour with another sophisticated stage show, which was performed on a square and a round stage. Both stages were connected by a jetty, which was used, among other things, by boat. Unusual props were also the phone booth at Come Talk to Me or the face camera attached to Gabriel's head during Digging in the Dirt . A concert recording was released as Secret World Live on VHS and CD, and later also on DVD.

At the beginning of the 1990s, Gabriel also published the multimedia CD-ROM Xplora, which, however, can no longer be used on modern operating systems.

Since 1995: Up , the Millennium Show and other diverse projects

In 1996 the CD-ROM EVE was produced and released the following year. Four pieces of music by Peter Gabriel mark the four levels of the game: Mud, The Garden, Profit, Art and Nature. The collaboration with visual artists and experts from various fields of knowledge resulted in a multimedia game that still runs on modern computer systems.

For the Millennium Show , which was performed in London in 2000 , Gabriel developed the background music entitled OVO . In 2002, his soundtrack Long Walk Home was released for the Australian film Rabbit-Proof Fence (German TV title: "The long way home"). This film music was also nominated for a Golden Globe .

Ten years after Us , his longest studio album to date, Up , was released in September 2002 , which was largely produced by Gabriel himself and which is reminiscent of the rather uncommercial, dark sound of Gabriel's first albums from the 1970s and 1980s. It also shows Gabriel's compositional freedom in the arrangement of the pieces, which, with the exception of the piano ballad The Drop, are no shorter than six minutes. Most of the pieces are not designed linearly and run through musically and thematically very dynamic parts.

For this album, too, Gabriel again developed a live concept for a tour, this time using a movable round stage. Gabriel moved across the stage in a transparent, inflatable ball (Growing Up), rode a bicycle (Solsbury Hill), wore a lamp-equipped jacket (Sledgehammer) or ran upside down along the stage ceiling (Downside Up). A talk show was staged for the title The Barry Williams Show , which can also be seen on the 2003 “Growing Up Live” DVD with real-looking image errors. Another DVD entitled Still Growing Up Live & Unwrapped (2005) shows a similar concert with a slimmed-down stage show. His daughter Melanie was part of his live band as a singer.

Peter Gabriel at the Quadriga Awards, 2008

Gabriel has been working with the game developers Cyan Worlds and Ubisoft since 2003, and he contributes the accompanying music for their games. The game Uru: Ages Beyond Myst from 2003 contains the song Burn You Up, Burn You Down in several sections . The track was originally included on a promo CD from Up but was canceled for the album's final release. In the game it is in a remix with the Blind Boys of Alabama included, also on the song Sky Blue of up could be heard. For the 2004 Myst IV - Revelation , Gabriel contributed a new recording of the song Curtains and took on a small speaking role.

For the 2006 World Cup in Germany , Peter Gabriel, under the overall direction of André Heller, was to organize and conduct the musical opening ceremony for the first game in Munich. When he was already writing songs for it, the project was canceled by FIFA due to lack of interest and financial considerations.

On February 10, 2006, however, he took part in the opening of the Winter Olympics in Turin . After the announcement by Yoko Ono , the widow of John Lennon , he sang his song and peace appeal Imagine .

In the summer of 2007 Gabriel went on tour again without having released a new album. In the course of "The Warm Up Tour Summer 07" he wanted to include more live rarities in the setlist and called on the fans registered on his homepage to put together their top 10 from a list of rarely played songs. A tour diary on his homepage, which documented the current tour preparations, gave insights into the possible song selection during the tour. The live band did not differ much from the 2002-2004 tour. Only the keyboard player Rachel Z , who was unable to accompany the tour due to scheduling reasons, was replaced by Angie Pollock from Scotland .

The credits of the animated film WALL · E - The Last Cleans Up the Earth ( Pixar Animation Studios , 2008) includes the song Down To Earth , for which Gabriel received his sixth Grammy and an Oscar nomination in 2009 .

In 2009 Gabriel completed a tour through Latin America and in 2010 released his project Scratch My Back . The album contains orchestral cover versions of well-known and less well-known musicians / bands.

On October 7, 2011, the release of the work New Blood , which can be described as a continuation of Scratch My Back , but with the difference that it is a reinterpretation of their own songs. At the same time a DVD with the title New Blood / Live was released in London . The concert film New Blood was shown in 3D in selected cinemas with digital 3D projection at the end of August and in September .

During his tour entitled “Back to Front” , which took him through North America in September / October 2012, Gabriel took a break. He told the American music magazine Rolling Stone that he wanted to take "a sabbatical year with his family". On September 29, 2013 the first concert of the European “Back To Front” tour took place in Herning , Denmark , the last concert on December 10, 2014 in Dublin , Ireland .

On September 9, 2016, the single "The Veil" was released, which Peter Gabriel developed together with Oliver Stone for the film Snowden .

WOMAD, Real World and other projects

Gabriel's great interest in world music since his third album led him to set up the WOMAD (World of Music, Arts and Dance) project, in which music, art and dance from different cultures are performed. The first WOMAD festival took place in 1982 in Shepton Mallett, England. To date, around 145 events have followed in 22 different countries.

At the end of the 1980s, Gabriel founded Real World Studios , linked to his record label of the same name , in order to integrate unknown artists from foreign cultures into the music of Western culture. Located in an old mill in the village of Box, Wiltshire, the studios serve as a stepping stone for musicians from all over the world to bring their music to areas and cultures they cannot develop themselves, especially the United States where music is located from Africa, Asia and Latin America is rarely broadcast via the usual channels. Musicians like Yungchen Lhamo , Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Youssou N'Dour have become known as a result .

Gabriel was also one of the founders of On Demand Distribution (OD2), the first online music download portal. This technology was later bought by the Finnish company Nokia and is still used today by Microsoft MSN in England.

In 2005 Gabriel bought the British audio mixer manufacturer Solid State Logic (SSL), which will continue to be run as an independent company.

Amnesty, human rights, charity campaigns

Gabriel constantly advocated the respect and dissemination of human rights .

In 1986 and 1988 he supported Amnesty International at the benefit concerts "A Conspiracy of Hope" and on the "Human Rights Now" tour in a team with Bruce Springsteen , Sting , Tracy Chapman and Youssou N'Dour .

In 1992 he co-founded the human rights organization Witness , which equips activists around the world with cameras to document human rights violations so that films and photos can be used as evidence in court.

More than thirty years after his participation on his album Mona Bone Jakon , Gabriel appeared in 2003 with Cat Stevens at the Nelson Mandela benefit concert " 46664 " in Johannesburg . The two musicians played the Cat Stevens hit Wild World together .

Accompanying musicians and contributors

Even if the time lag between Gabriel's releases has grown, his crew of musicians and technicians has remained relatively constant in recent years.

Bassist Tony Levin has been part of the live and studio line-up since 1976, guitarist David Rhodes has been on every album since 1979 and on every tour since 1983. Gabriel is known for selecting outstanding musicians like L. Shankar , Youssou N'Dour , Tracy Chapman , Larry Fast , Manu Katché and Stewart Copeland, as well as professional producers like Bob Ezrin , Robert Fripp , Steve Lillywhite and Daniel Lanois .

Gabriel has worked with singer Kate Bush several times over the years . At a Kate Bush television special in 1979, the two sang a cover of Roy Harper's Another Day in a duet . Bush then worked as a background singer in the Gabriel pieces Games Without Frontiers and No Self Control in 1980 . In 1986 there was another duet with Don't Give Up .

For the soundtrack of " Babe: Pig in the City " Gabriel took exception not as a composer but only as a singer of the title That'll Do by Randy Newman in appearance. In 1998 Gabriel and Newman appeared at the Academy Awards .

Gabriel has been working with composer John Metcalfe , a former member of The Durutti Column , since 2010 . Metcalfe took over the orchestral arrangements for Gabriel's album Scratch My Back , among other things .

Possible Genesis reunion

Since 2004 there have been regular rumors of a five-man Genesis reunion. In 2005 and 2006 Gabriel met with Genesis members Collins, Banks and Rutherford to discuss a possible reunion tour with a joint revival of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway . However, due to time constraints, Gabriel declined and Genesis decided to go on tour without him. Asked about a possible reunification by the British daily The Daily Telegraph in June 2008, Gabriel said: “It's like having your own children. No matter how far you develop apart from each other, you continue to love them ", with a winking" ... on a good day! "He concluded a short performance together on the occasion of Genesis' admission to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in March 2010 the Rolling Stone anyway: “As far as I know, I will definitely not sing. During our last reunion, I learned that you can't just go there like that. You have to rehearse beforehand. "

The classic Genesis line-up last appeared in 1982. At that time, the former bandmates rushed to the aid of Gabriel, who was in financial difficulties due to the WOMAD project. Most recently, a new version of the song The Carpet Crawlers (1999) was recorded for a Genesis hits album , on which Gabriel also sang. Gabriel re-sang a few passages for post-released live versions of The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and the Supper's Ready suite .

Personal

Peter Gabriel was married for the first time from 1971 to 1987. There are two daughters from this marriage (* 1974; * 1976). The younger daughter Melanie Gabriel was a background singer in his live band on the “Growing Up Live” tour, the “Still Growing Up” tour and the “Warm Up Tour Summer '07”. Anna-Marie produced a documentary for the “Growing Up” Tour 2002, which was released on DVD in 2004 with the title Growing Up On Tour - A family Portrait .

Gabriel has two sons with his second wife Meabh Flynn, whom he married in 2002.
