I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe) (English for: " I know what I like (in your wardrobe) ") is the first chart-placed song by the British rock band Genesis . The song was released as a single in the UK in August 1973 with the off-album song "Twilight Alehouse" as the b-side.

background

I Know What I Like also appeared as a track on the album Selling England by the Pound . It's a happy piece and offers a change from the opening track Dancing with the Moonlit Knight .

The text of the piece, like many of Peter Gabriel's pieces in his time at Genesis, tells a story. It portrays a young man who makes a living mowing the lawn and whose philosophy is to stay as he is and not do great deeds. The text was inspired by Betty Swanwick's painting The Dream , which was used as the cover for the album.

The song has a slight touch of Eastern music, emphasized percussive and with sitar motifs by Mike Rutherford . Steve Hackett used various effects to create the sound of a lawnmower.

Later versions of the piece, like the one on the live albums Seconds Out and Live over Europe 2007, featured longer instrumental passages. In the film Genesis: In Concert you can see Phil Collins performing a dance with a tambourine during the song as a show interlude.

The piece was the only pop hit in the band's early years and was the band's biggest hit before Phil Collins became the band's lead singer.

The piece was played in medley with other old Genesis pieces on The Way We Walk and Turn It On Again tours .
