Collins and Rutherford on the 1980 Duke tour of Liverpool

Duke (Engl. For: " Herzog ") is the tenth studio album by the British rock band Genesis . It was released in March 1980 and was the first Genesis album to reach number one on the UK album charts. Duke also increased the popularity of Genesis in the United States .

background

Duke was inducted and released during a phase of Genesis reorientation. Tony Banks and Mike Rutherford recorded their solo albums A Curious Feeling and Smallcreep's Day in advance , which were not very successful. Phil Collins, on the other hand, emigrated to Vancouver with his wife to save his marriage, which was heavily burdened not least by his success with Genesis. Collins and his wife eventually separated anyway. As a result, he wrote some very personal songs, most of which were later released on his successful solo debut Face Value . Two of these songs - Misunderstanding and Please Don't Ask - found a place on Duke .

A suite runs through the album, which consists of the songs Behind the Lines , Duchess , Guide Vocal , Turn it on Again , Duke's Travels and Duke's End . Originally, these six tracks were to be lined up on a complete album page, which marks the attempt to create a second Supper's Ready (see Foxtrot ). However, the band finally decided to split the suite into six individual tracks and distribute them over the album. Due to this context, the album is considered by critics to be the most organic Genesis work since A Trick of the Tail 1976.

Mike Rutherford's bass playing is very clear and full of energy, the guitar was used by him - as usual in later Genesis works - only sparingly, but atmospherically and effectively. Collins' work on drums and percussion is considered very mature, technically perfect and dynamic; unlike in the following years, he hardly ever uses synthetic drums on Duke . In many songs, Banks eschews unusual synthesizer sounds and focuses primarily on the piano.

With Misunderstanding , Genesis was able to contribute a big single hit in the USA, and Turn it on Again was regularly played on the radio. Duke is considered her breakthrough there. Despite the great commercial success of the album, it is also valued by critics and progressive rock fans because, in addition to straightforward pop music, it also contains many elements of classic 1970s progressive rock and thus marks a phase of transition.

Description of individual songs

  • Duchess : This title is about the career development of a female rock star: the Duchess , the female counterpart to the eponymous Duke . The song tells of the protagonist's initial rise to final decline in show business.
  • Guide Vocal : This short piece is based solely on Collins 'vocals and Banks' piano. The text of the song is also taken up again in Duke's Travels in a slightly different form.
  • Turn It On Again : This is a very popular live piece by the band, which has not been missing at any concert of the band since it was released. On the last few tours it mostly formed the end of a Genesis concert. The song is based on a 13/8 time and consists of a bass pedal rhythm and a riff repeated by keyboard and guitar.
  • Cul-de-Sac : The title comes from the French and means dead end . The song is - typically for the author Banks - characterized by piano, synthesizers, different harmonies and rhythm changes. The song is one of the few clearly progressive pieces on the album.
