Anthony Edwin Phillips (born December 23, 1951 in Putney , South London , England ) is a British musician . He is best known as a founding member and guitarist of the group Genesis , which he left in 1970 after two albums; his last concert with Genesis took place on July 18, 1970 at the King's Arms in Haywards Heath.

Life

In the 1970s he first studied classical music and on the side wrote the music for his first solo album with Mike Rutherford , which was finally released in 1977 as The Geese and the Ghost after several years of sporadic work . It is a mixture of soft, lyrical ballads and longer compositions that approximate classical structures. The release coincided with the rise of punk and sold rather moderately, probably mainly to Genesis fans, as Mike Rutherford and Phil Collins can also be heard on the album .

The next two albums, Wise after the Event (1978) and Sides (1979), tried to find a wider audience with conventional rock music , but met with little approval from most fans.

At the same time, the first episode of the Private Parts & Pieces series was released. There you can usually find non-commercial, personal sound documents, often guitar solos, but also synthesizer music and songs. One or the other unreleased Genesis song from the old days also found its way onto vinyl .

In addition, Phillips albums were released almost every year, which are mostly only noticed by fans. The palette ranges from instrumental guitar or piano music (Twelve) to neo-romantic orchestral music (Tarka, Slow Dance) and electronic music (1984).
