Genesis is the twelfth studio album by the British rock band Genesis of the same name and was released in October 1983. With this album, the group finally achieved their commercial breakthrough in Europe and the United States , where Genesis rose to superstars whose concerts filled stadiums. With That's All and Mama , two very well-known and successful single hits are also included on the album. Genesis reached number one on the UK album charts.
The record cover was designed by British designer and photographer Bill Smith. The yellow shapes come from the Tupperware product "Shape O Toy Ball". This toy consists of a two-part hollow ball, into whose appropriately shaped openings the molds can be thrown.
background
The album title Genesis is attributed to the fact that all the pieces were developed by the three band members together, in contrast to the previous albums. It is their first album to be written and recorded in The Farm , the band's recording studio in Chiddingfold .
In addition to successful hits, the album also contained an overlong title with the suite Home by the Sea / Second Home by the Sea , which has some progressive elements and a long instrumental part. This suite is particularly popular with fans of the band's progressive rock phase in the 1970s and has long been an integral part of concerts. For the first time since The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway (1974) was released, the Genesis session did not produce any "surplus" titles that could have been released as single B-sides, but only the nine songs on the album . Two years later, Mike Rutherford developed the song A Call to Arms by his band Mike & the Mechanics from a short music fragment (a so-called "bit") that was created at that time and was not developed further by the band .

Description of individual songs
- Mama : The song begins with a drum machine rhythm programmed by Mike Rutherford with a pronounced off-beat, followed by Banks' keyboard play. The song describes an ominous relationship between a man and a prostitute. Collins' insane laugh on this track was inspired by Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five 's song The Message .
- That's All : The song, based on a piano riff, describes a love affair between a man and a woman, which simply cannot work due to irreconcilable differences between the parties. Collins' vocals in the title range from irony to cynicism to a very aggressive scream.
- Illegal Alien : This Genesis-atypical piece is an ironic plea for Mexican illegal emigrants who hope for a better life in the United States of America.
