description
At over eleven minutes, the piece is the longest on the album. It is divided into two sections. The first section is based on 12-string guitars with vocal harmonies by Gabriel and Collins and contains a short flute and oboe solo.
The song ends with a four and a half minute instrumental part in 7/8 time with a synthesizer solo on the ARP Pro Soloist.
The lyrics by Banks and Rutherford are based on the poem The Wasteland by TS Eliot .
reception
François Couture reviewed on Allmusic :
"Along with" The Musical Box "," Watcher of the Skies "and" Supper's Ready "," The Cinema Show "remains one of the most influential and popular songs from the Genesis repertoire with Peter Gabriel. ... "The Cinema Show" is a strikingly positive piece in a major key. There is not a cloud in this sky, no turn of events brings a disturbing note - something rare in this period of Genesis, the only precedent being "Can-Utility and the Coastliners". As an instant live favorite, the song was a concert highlight from 1973 to 1974. It remained on the set list after Gabriel's departure and into the 1970s (a live version with Phil Collins handling vocals can be heard on Seconds Out ). Although the song portion was later omitted, the keyboard solo section remained as part of the "In the Cage" medley (seen on Three Sides Live) performed on every Genesis show in the 1980s. ... It's worth noting that Banks always played the same solo without changing a single note. The Flower Kings provided a very strong cover of "The Cinema Show" for the tribute album "The Fox Lies Down" which modified the solo and brought the song into jazz fusion territory while staying true to the original. ”
