The Carpet Crawlers or Carpet Crawlers (English for: " The Carpet Crawlers ") is a ballad by the British rock band Genesis , which was released as a single. It comes from the concept album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway from 1974. The Carpet Crawlers can also be found on the live albums Seconds Out and Live over Europe 2007 .

In this part of the story, the protagonist Rael is in a corridor with a red carpet and kneeling people slowly crawling to a wooden door. When Rael walks through this door, he is in a room with a festive table and a spiral staircase that leads up to a chamber.

One interpretation of the text is the path of the sperm (the crawlers ) on the way to the egg cell.

On the B-side you can hear Evil Jam (The Waiting Room - Live) . The single was recorded in August – October 1974 and first appeared in April 1975. The length of the ballad is 5:14 minutes. It was produced on the Charisma / Virgin label by (UK) John Burns together with Genesis.

A re-recorded version of the song from November 1999 was released under the Atco / Atlantic label by Trevor Horn . The separately recorded new edition of the classic comes from the compilation Turn It On Again - The Hits and is a quasi-reunion of the original formation of Genesis. The length of The Carpet Crawlers 1999 is 5:39 minutes.
