Afterglow ( German  sunset ) is a song by the British band Genesis and was designed by Tony Banks wrote. The song was released in December 1976 on the album Wind & Wuthering and was played at the band's concerts until the end.

description

Afterglow is a simple and concise song; it marks a turning point in Genesis; it became clear to the band that they could appreciate short songs too.

Tony Banks wrote Afterglow "almost in the time it takes to play". Banks said, "It's about responding to a disaster and realizing what is important to you. As I was writing the melody, I wrote the first verse and made the chorus the essence of what the person is really thinking."

"Afterglow is simple, but still has elements of Prog Rock," said Banks about the title. A few days after he wrote it, he suddenly got the impression that his melody was like that of Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas . He played it again and found it wasn't the same.

A Moog Taurus bass pedal was used for the deep bass notes .

reception

François Couture reviewed on Allmusic :

"The last song on Wind and Wuthering," Afterglow ", is the only track on this LP that is widely known. While most of the material on the album fell through the cracks, "Afterglow" was performed live for more than ten years (1977-1987). A sad love song, slow and very simple. Its strength lies in its dawn as at the end it transitions from minor tonality to major and from restrained depression to heartwarming optimism (it almost feels elegiac). It was often performed live at the end of the "In the Cage" medley. It's the only Genesis ballad that was really a crowd-pleaser. Phil Collins' vocal performance is a bit shy in the studio, but he soon developed a more touching performance. "
