Derek William Dick (stage name Fish ; born April 25, 1958 in Dalkeith , Midlothian , Scotland ) is a Scottish musician and actor.

Life

Marillion

Derek William Dick, Fish , became known as the singer and frontman of the British rock group Marillion , which he joined in 1981 after dropping out of studies and doing odd jobs as a forest worker, gas station attendant and gardener. After one of the top ten hits with Kayleigh , Lavender 1985 and Incommunicado 1987 , Fish left the band in 1988 after musical differences. The band gave their last concert together on July 23, 1988 in Craigtoun Country Park in St. Andrews, Scotland . By this time, Marillion had released four studio and two live albums, which were shaped by Fish's theatrical singing style, which was reminiscent of the early years of Genesis .

Fish is often compared to Peter Gabriel , former singer of Genesis. Both have similar voices, used to celebrate their singing with acting gestures, makeup and costumes in their early days, and later split from the band to begin solo projects. Fish himself, however, sees himself more influenced by Peter Hammill . His talent also lies in his lyrical-poetic writing style, which is often linked to his own experiences and problems.

solo

The solo career that began in 1988 was rather difficult. The commercial success expected by the record companies failed, and so Fish separated from EMI and Polydor . From 1993 he released his albums with his own company Dick Bros Record Company , which he later sold to Roadrunner Records . Occasionally, Fish also works as an actor for British television productions.

Fish has a small fan base that has been loyal for years. Organized in fan forums, "Fishheads", as Fish calls them, meet from all over the world for "Conventions".

In 1994 he played under this name alongside Brian Blessed in the film "Chasing the Deer" by the Cromwell Production Group. In this strip about the Jacobite uprising in 1745 under Bonnie Prince Charlie , Fish plays the Jacobite Angus Cameron.

Between March 2007 and June 2007 he hosted the radio show "Fish on Fridays" on the British digital radio station Planetrock.com, every Friday at 6 p.m. UK time. Here he gave insights into the development of his new studio album (13th Star) and played his current favorite hits as well as his favorite songs from previous years.

In 2010 and 2011, Fish went on an acoustic tour again after first going unplugged in 1994. Accompanied only by (electronic) piano and guitar, he sang Marillion songs and his own titles. In September 2013 his new studio album “A Feast Of Consequences” was released, which can initially only be obtained by mail order from the artist's website.

In September 2018 Fish released another solo album, the EP "A Parley With Angels", consisting of three new songs and four live recordings.

On February 21, 2019, Fish received Planet Rock's The Rocks Award for The Best British Single for his single "Man With A Stick".

reunion

On August 26, 2007 there was a brief reunion of Marillion with Fish for a single appearance. On the occasion of a festival in the market square of Aylesbury , the place where the band was founded (about 65 kilometers northwest of London), his old bandmates played their debut single Market Square Heroes with him at the invitation of Fish . After the performance, he made it clear in interviews that there would be no reunion.

Private

Dick got his name Fish from friends at a time when he was only allowed to bathe in a rented apartment at certain times, and he then celebrated the weekly bath for hours. He is a fan of the Scottish soccer club Hibernian Football Club and the German club Karlsruher SC . The home ground of Hibernian FC, the stadium on Easter Road , is mentioned in his song Lucky from the album Internal Exile .

Fish was married to the German Tamara Nowy from July 1987 to July 2001. They have a daughter named Tara, to whom the song of the same name on the album Sunsets on Empire is dedicated. His wedding, planned for May 2007, to the then singer of Mostly Autumn , Heather Findlay, was canceled shortly after the invitations were sent. In May 2009 he married his wife Katherine, they separated in December 2009. On October 14, 2017, Fish married the German Simone Rösler in Aberlady .
