Xuthos

Xuthos ( ancient Greek Ξοῦθος ) is in Greek mythology the son of the Hellen and the nymph Orseis - or, less commonly, of Aiolos and Enarete .

His brothers Aiolos and Doros - the ancestors of the Aiolians and Dorians - drove him out of Iolkos , which he ruled for some time by accusing him of stealing their paternal inheritance. The Athenian king Erechtheus granted him asylum, and Xuthos married his daughter Krëusa . Together they became parents to Diomede and Achaios and Ion . The latter became the ancestors of the Achaeans and the Ionians . Xuthos founded the Tetrapolis , which consisted of the four places Marathon ( Μαραθών ), Probalinthos ( Προβάλινθος ), Trikorythos ( Τρικόρυθος ) and Oinoe ( Οἰνόη ).

After Erechtheus died, Xuthos proposed his eldest son, Kekrops II, as his successor. Since this decision was displeasing to his brothers, he had to leave Athens. He went to the north of the Peloponnese , where he died in Aigialos , which was later renamed Achaia after his son .
