Aioler

The Aiolians ( ancient Greek Αἰολεῖς ), Aiolians or Aeolians were among the most important tribes of ancient Greece alongside the Dorians and Ionians .

The name is derived from Aiolos , one of the three sons of Hellen , the mythical progenitor of all Greeks, with the nymph Orseis . Aiolos' brother Doros was the progenitor of the Dorians, his nephews Achaios and Ion the progenitors of the Achaeans and the Ionians. At first the Aiolers lived mainly in Thessaly , but founded during the Dark Centuries , at the latest in the 8th century BC. BC, settlements in north-west Asia Minor and the offshore Aegean Islands (so-called Aioli migration ).

The Aiolers spoke the Aiolic dialect, which was widespread in the classical period in Thessaly, parts of Boeotia , on Lesbos and in the northern part of western Asia Minor.
