Market Square Heroes (English for. " Market Square Heroes ' ') is the debut EP of the British rock group Marillion . The EP was released on October 25, 1982 as a 12 " maxi single (12 EMI 5351) with 33⅓ min −1 , at the same time as the 7" single of the same name (EMI 5351), on which the longtrack was not included. The EP was also released as a Picture Disc in April 1983(12 EMIP 5351).

Emergence

A few days after signing the record deal, EMI booked the Park Gate Studio for ten days. Together with EMI, the three pieces by Marillion were selected for the first publication. The songs had been in the band's setlist for a long time, so no problems were expected. The producer David Hitchcock and the band worked almost continuously on the recordings, but due to the lack of studio experience, the takes were not finished in time, so that afterwards they had to continue working in the Wessex Sound Studio for a few days. The cover was designed by Mark Wilkinson based on an idea from Fish .

content

In Market Square Heroes "is about unemployment and about the Pied Piper syndrome to follow someone because of his charisma, the risk that one is blind," said Fish in an interview with the magazine "Metal Star". The word Antichrist occurs in the text of Market Square Heroes . In order to be played on the radio in any case, Antichrist was replaced by Battlepriest in a special radio edit . Three Boats Down From The Candy is about a one-night stand Fish had with a girl on Brighton Beach , not far from a boat called Candy, and the mixed feelings that one-night stand left behind. The longtrack Grendel was created from the original instrumental piece The Tower . When Fish was asked to write a text for it, he was reading the book Grendel by John Gardner , which is based on the Anglo-Saxon heroic poem Beowulf . In the poetry, Grendel is described as a man-devouring monster that haunts the Danish King Hrothgar , while Gardner's novel depicts the same conflict from the monster's point of view. Fish also incorporated the importance of religion in conflict into the text.

Reviews

“... this EP has always been a revelation for me. Genesis or not: it was a new beginning within the now very desperate prog scene of that time; Such a consistent reorientation with such artful "sophisticated" texts had not been heard for a long time. [...] The main reason to rave about were above all the voice and - closely related to it - the lyrics: here Fish has delivered real masterpieces that after a while he was not able to do it himself ... "

- Henning Mangold on babyblaue-seiten.de

“The two short songs on page 1 of the EP are nice," Three Boats ... "a whole bit better than the rather insignificant" Market Square Heroes ". The page-filling "Grendel" is the classic case of dispute. What should one think of this "supper's ready for the poor"? Back when I proudly carried the record home and heard it for the first time, I didn't think the piece was so bad. The years went by, and when I heard the work again the other day, I got a big yawn - just too predictable and constructed. The bottom line is rather for music / prog-historical relevance and worthwhile because of the collector's value. "

- Michael Weinel on babyblaue-seiten.de

"Market Square Heroes EP is simply a piece of prog history and excellent addition to any prog rock music collection."
