Steve Rothery
Steven "Steve" Rothery (born November 25, 1959 in Brampton , West Riding of Yorkshire ) is the guitarist of the English neo-prog group Marillion .
biography
Rothery has been playing the guitar since he was 15. In 1979 he became aware of a band called Silmarillion who were looking for a guitarist through an advertisement in an English music magazine . After a successful audition on August 19, 1979 Rothery became a member of the band. Since then he has concentrated more on the melody, composition and mood of a song than on playing technique.
Steve Rothery is the only founding member of Marillion left in the band. In addition to his work at Marillion, he founded the solo project The Wishing Tree and released the albums Carnival of Souls and Ostara .
For some years now, Rothery has been playing small-scale acoustic concerts with Peter Trewavas and Steve Hogarth from Marillion under the name Los Trios Marillos, on which mainly Marillion songs are played.
Rothery has two children.
style
Steve Rothery's style is seen by many fans as the typical Marillion sound due to the distorted and sustain- enriched Stratocaster . His guitar playing is significantly influenced by David Gilmour's playing. Like Gilmour, Rothery places more emphasis on the individual note than on extensive fast-paced play and other technical subtleties. Furthermore, Rothery named Jeff Beck , Larry Carlton , Andy Latimer and Steve Hackett as his other role models in various interviews .
