RanestRane (from Italian "strange frogs" ) is an Italian neo-prog band from Rome that stages melodic, partly instrumental symphonic prog with fine melody lines as a rock opera .
Band history
Established in 1998 and conceptual idea
The band was founded in 1998 in Rome by the current members and initially made a name for themselves in the Italian prog rock scene through live performances.
In the following years she developed and refined her conceptual idea of conceiving rock operas in the classic Italian tradition of progressive rock . The band combines their own composed music with short excerpts from a film that is projected in the background.
Among the musical influences are bands like Goblin , Genesis and Marillion .
The band released the first complete project in 2002. The four Italians accompanied Werner Herzog's film “ Nosferatu ” in concerts and provided him with new sounds. This procedure, referred to by the band as "Cineconcerto", is reminiscent of the film adaptations by Art Zoyd , a. had also chosen “Nosferatu” as an object for their processing. In contrast to the French, however, RanestRane did not choose the original by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau as a template, but the remake by Werner Herzog.
First studio album
The resulting album Nosferatu Il Vampiro (2007) offers a new soundtrack to Werner Herzog's film, in the form of a kind of rock opera , with Daniele Pomo as the only singer. Excerpts from the film, i.e. original fragments of the Italian soundtrack, short dialogues and monologues, serve as hooks for the individual numbers, which are then performed by the four protagonists on various keyboard instruments, guitar, bass and drums, sometimes interrupted by fade-ins with film dialogues. Musically, one moves entirely in the tradition of the classic, more song-oriented Italo-Prog of the 70s. There are ties to neo or retro prog and to the Italian bell canto rock.
In 2011 the band released their second album, Shining , an adaptation of Stanley Kubrick's “ Shining ” with psychedelic atmospheres and changing vocal and instrumental parts, as is typical of Ranestane's work.
The Space Odyssey trilogy
In November 2013, A Space Odyssey - Part 1 - Monolith, the first part of a trilogy inspired by Stanley Kubrick's masterpiece 2001: A Space Odyssey , was published. The album features guest appearances by Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth , guitarist and singer, respectively, from Marillion. The opportunity to work together came in 2012 during the annual Web Italy Convention (the gathering of Italian Marillion fans), when RanestRane previewed the album and played some songs from the Marillion repertoire with Steve Rothery. In the same year RanestRane played at the Italian Prog Rock Festival in Japan together with guitarist Enzo Vita , accompanied by a symphony orchestra. It was the first live performance of the seminal symphonic rock album Contaminazione (originally published in 1973 by "Il Rovescio della Medaglia" - RDM) in its entirety. The recording of the concert was released as Live in Tokyo in 2014 .
In 2014 RanestRane played as the opening act for the Steve Rothery Band on their European tour. Monolith in Rome - A Space Odyssey Live was released as an album on DVD and CD on February 5, 2015 . This live recording was filmed and recorded at the Crossroads Live Club in Rome with Steve Rothery. In March 2015 RanestRane performed on the prestigious stage of the Marillion Weekend in Port Zelande, Ouddorp (Netherlands) in front of 3,000 spectators. In September 2015 the band played acoustic arrangements of Marillion's classics and Hogarth's song repertoire with Steve Hogarth in Rome. The event was part of Steve Hogarth's H natural 2015 Christmas tour. On December 12, 2016, the live recording of the concert was released on DVD as Friends, Romans: H Natural with RanestRane . A live CD was also released in February 2017.
Almost two years after the first part, the band released the second part of their interpretation of the music to Stanley Kubrick's classic " 2001: A Space Odyssey" on November 16, 2015 with the album A Space Odyssey - Part 2 - HAL . RanestRane toured Europe on November 27, 2015 in support of the album with their HAL EUROPA TOUR 2015/2016 and played in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, Denmark, Sweden and England.
In spring 2017 the band toured under the motto "The Cinematic Show" through Germany, Sweden, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Denmark and Italy. During this tour RanestRane played a "best of" of their previous albums as well as a preview of the new, third album of the odyssey trilogy A Space Odyssey - Trilogy . In October 2017, RanestRane opened for Marillion's Japanese Tour .
With the release of the third part, A Space Odyssey - Final Part - Starchild , in 2018, the band ended this complex project. This album also features guest appearances by Steve Rothery and Steve Hogarth from Marillion. This was followed by a fan weekend and concerts in Italy, the Netherlands, Germany, England, Denmark and Sweden on their Starchild Tour (The 20th Anniversary Across Europe) .
In September 2018 RanestRane performed at the Veruno Two Days Prog Festival , the most important Italian Prog festival.
On July 21, 2019, the band played at the largest prog rock festival in Europe, the Night of the Prog on the Loreley open-air stage in Germany.
The new RanestRane project The Wall il cineconcerto is largely finished and is expected to be published in November 2019. The project and the following album interpret the film Pink Floyd - The Wall by Alan Parker in the usual RanestRane manner , which was shot by the director and Roger Waters to the music of Pink Floyd and which will celebrate its 40th anniversary in 2019.
