Sir Alan William Parker (born February 14, 1944 in London Borough of Islington , London , England , † July 31, 2020 in London) was a British screenwriter , writer , director and film producer .

Life

Alan Parker was initially a successful commercial filmmaker. In the 1970s he founded a commercial film production company with Alan Marshall . Marshall was also involved as a producer on all of his film projects up to and including Angel Heart from 1987. The film editor Gerry Hambling (1926–2013) was responsible for editing all film projects. He also collaborated very often with the cameraman Michael Seresin .

Parker has received several Oscar nominations (including for 12 noon - Midnight Express ) and has won the British Academy Film Award four times (including for Bugsy Malone ) and the "Grand Jury Prize" at the 1985 Cannes Film Festival (with Birdy ). In 1981 he directed Pink Floyd - The Wall , the feature film adaptation of the hit rock album The Wall by the British rock group Pink Floyd .

A highlight of his work was Angel Heart (1987) with Mickey Rourke , Robert De Niro and Lisa Bonet in the lead roles.

The film Mississippi Burning (1988), with Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe in the leading roles , won an Oscar (best cinematography) . The dedicated work for civil rights in the post- racial United States is based on a true story.

With The Commitments (1991), a film about a young soul band of the Irish working class, Parker showed his skills again.

Parker's other works: the comedy Welcome to Wellville (1994) with Sir Anthony Hopkins , the film adaptation of the Lloyd Webber musical Evita with Madonna (1996), the drama My Mother's Ashes (1999) and the thriller The Life of David Gale ( 2002).

Parker was a founding member of the Director's Guild of Great Britain . In 1985 the British Academy honored Parker for his outstanding contributions to British cinema with the Michael Balcon Award . On New Years Day 2002, Parker was knighted by the British Queen. In 2013 he was awarded the Academy Fellowship of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in recognition of his life's work . Parker has also been an Honorary Doctor of Art from Sunderland University since 2005 .

Parker was married to Annie Inglis from 1966 to 1992 and then to Lisa Moran. He was the father of five children, four of them from his first marriage.

Parker died at the age of 76 after a prolonged illness.

Alan Parker received, among other things, the CineMerit Award 2004 of the Munich Film Festival for outstanding contributions to the art of film.
