The film tells the life of Eva Perón , portrayed from the perspective of the narrator, the worker Che.

Eva Perón leaves her hometown Los Toldos and moves to Buenos Aires . There she makes a career in the entertainment industry, where her lovers help her again and again. One day she meets Colonel Juan Perón , who is always in the background during the coups in Argentina .

After a power struggle, Juan Perón is arrested. Eva Perón helps organize protest demonstrations. After his release, Juan Perón married Evita and was later elected President of Argentina. Eva Perón embarks on a trip to Europe, where she is greeted with enthusiasm in some countries and hostile in others. She is denounced as a whore in the Italian media .

When the displeasure gets too great, she organizes an aid organization for the poor. However, it is emphasized again and again that only some of the donations go where they should actually go.

Eva Perón dies of cancer . She is carried to the grave in a large funeral procession. Your spirit dances with the spirit of Che.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film had no soul and could offer little under the "glittering" surface. He praised the production design, but criticized the “not three-dimensional” and “unsympathetic” character of Eva Perón and the “surprisingly undemanding” script. Berardinelli praised Antonio Banderas' portrayal of Jonathan Pryce's talent as "wasted".

Roger Ebert wrote in the Chicago Sun-Times on January 3, 1997 that the film allowed audiences to identify with Eva Perón. He praised the representation of Madonna.

Kenneth Turan wrote in the Los Angeles Times on December 25, 1996 that the effect of the film, in which practically all dialogue was sung, was limited. Madonna plays "absolutely convincing".
