Procol Harum is a British rock band formed in 1967. In the same year they celebrated their greatest success with the world hit A Whiter Shade of Pale .
Band history
Most of the musicians who later came together with Procol Harum had previously as The Paramount some beat - and rhythm and blues - Singles added.
Gary Brooker and Keith Reid founded Procol Harum in 1967. The band name is said to have originated from the misspelling due to the telephone transmission of a cat name "Procul Harum". In the absence of a correct explanation of this cat name, the band name was based on a Latin origin, here for "far from here and now" (whereby the correct translation would have to be procul his ).
Procol Harum was best known in the spring of 1967 with one song: A Whiter Shade of Pale was sold 2.5 million times shortly after its release and since then at least 6 million times worldwide. This success caught the authors Brooker and Reid by surprise. The Hammond organ playing by Matthew Fisher , based on Johann Sebastian Bach , played a major role in the success of this song . For a long time only Brooker and Reid were considered composers before a British court attributed part of the copyright to Matthew Fisher at the end of 2006.
Other hits like Homburg and A Salty Dog followed . Procol Harum also enjoyed success in the 1970s, including with the album Grand Hotel , on which Christiane Legrand sang as a guest soloist .
The line-up changed frequently - with the exception of Brooker, Wilson and Reid. The band released ten albums until they broke up in 1977, including Live with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra . She was characterized by imaginative compositions, often based on classical music. In addition, there are also songs in Procol Harum's work that are deeply rooted in the blues.
In 1991 Procol Harum got together again, with Mark Brzezicki on drums in place of B. J. Wilson, who died in 1990 , and is still a successful live band. The group also became active again in the studio.
In the current line-up, Geoff Whitehorn (guitar), Josh Phillips (organ), Geoff Dunn (drums) and Matt Pegg (bass) play alongside Gary Brooker. Pete Brown is now writing the lyrics.
